Hideo Kojima has confirmed that Bill Skarsgård will portray the lead character in PHYSINT, Kojima Productions’ upcoming action-espionage game. The announcement arrived during Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast, where Kojima also shared a new poster featuring Skarsgård and fellow cast member Charlee Fraser.

What Kojima said about working with Skarsgård
Kojima described the casting as a new collaboration between two long-time admirers of each other’s work. He said costume fittings, scans, and camera tests completed earlier in 2026 with Skarsgård and Fraser gave him “tremendous confidence” in the direction of the project.

Those sessions indicate that performance-capture and character-production work is underway, but they do not reveal the protagonist’s name, story role, or the game’s mechanics.
The confirmed PHYSINT cast
Skarsgård is the only performer confirmed specifically as the lead. He joins previously announced cast members:
- Charlee Fraser
- Don Lee
- Minami Hamabe
Kojima Productions has said further casting, talent scans, and outside creative collaborations are still in progress.

A poster, a tagline, and Kojima’s ambition
The new key art pairs Skarsgård with Fraser and carries the line “The Next Cold War Begins.” It establishes an espionage-thriller tone, but it does not provide confirmed plot or gameplay specifics.

Kojima has described PHYSINT as the culmination of more than 40 years of his career and said it aims to redefine action-espionage without being bound by existing genres in digital entertainment.

Why PHYSINT is now an Xbox-published game
The project was initially partnered with PlayStation Studios. Kojima said PlayStation notified Kojima Productions in mid-June 2026 that it would cancel PHYSINT, after which the studio spent three months looking for a new partner before reaching an agreement with Xbox.

Reporting by Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the project, said PlayStation’s decision involved concerns about budget, potential profitability, and exclusivity. Those reported business concerns have not been publicly detailed by PlayStation as a full explanation for the split.

Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida publicly reacted with surprise, writing “びっくりしたなあ…,” or roughly, “That surprised me…”

Release date, platforms, and budget: what remains unknown
Neither Xbox nor Kojima Productions has announced a release date, launch window, confirmed platforms, budget, or exclusivity arrangement for PHYSINT.
45
In May 2025, Kojima said the game would take another five or six years. If treated only as a rough estimate, that could suggest 2030 or 2031—but it was not an official release target, and the later change in publisher makes any projection especially uncertain.

OD – KNOCK production update
Kojima also provided an update on OD – KNOCK, the horror project being developed with Xbox Game Studios. He said performance capture and ADR recording had resumed after the SAG strike interruption, and that production was proceeding on schedule. No release date was announced.

For now, Skarsgård’s lead casting is the clearest new detail on PHYSINT: the project has a confirmed star, an expanding ensemble, and a new publisher, while its story, systems, platforms, and launch timing remain under wraps.
