Google is trying to make the web more visible inside its AI answers. Its May 6, 2026 Search update adds more contextual links and discovery surfaces to AI Mode and AI Overviews, but the announcement describes a link-visibility change—not evidence that publisher referral traffic will recover.[1][

What Google is adding
Google says the update is meant to help people find relevant websites, deep insights and original content from across the web. The new surfaces include relevant article suggestions, direct links within AI responses, website previews and ways to surface personal perspectives.[1]
The most important interface change is source placement. In AI Mode and AI Overviews, links may now appear next to the specific generated text they relate to; on desktop, hovering over an inline link can show the website name or page title.[2]
| New source feature | What users see | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Inline source links | A link placed beside the AI-generated point it supports.[ |
