Google Quantum AI और collaborators के हालिया काम में अनुमान है कि secp256k1 elliptic-curve discrete logarithm problem को एक modelled route में लगभग 1,200 logical qubits और अधिकतम 90 मिलियन, यानी करीब 9 करोड़, Toffoli gates से हल किया जा सकता है; इसी काम की reporting में 5 लाख से कम physical qubits और पर्याप्त advanced machines पर minutes में attack वाले scenarios भी बताए गए हैं.
इसका मतलब यह नहीं कि Bitcoin आज attack के लिए खुला पड़ा है। वही reporting कहती है कि quantum attacks अभी feasible नहीं हैं, और Bitcoin Magazine की coverage इसे सीधे शब्दों में रखती है: ऐसा computer आज मौजूद नहीं है.
इसलिए practical निष्कर्ष बीच का है: घबराने की जरूरत नहीं, लेकिन इंतजार करना भी ठीक नहीं। Government migration guidance पहले ही post-quantum cryptography को कई सालों वाला technology change मानती है; blockchain readiness को भी इसी नजर से देखना चाहिए.
Future attacker को blockchain को “decrypt” करने की जरूरत नहीं होगी। high-value target होगा: public key से private key निकालना। अगर किसी Bitcoin public key का खुलासा हो चुका है और quantum computer संबंधित elliptic-curve problem को तेजी से solve कर सकता है, तो attacker private key derive कर valid spend forge करने की कोशिश कर सकता है.
यह बात इस दावे से अलग है कि quantum computer अपने-आप Bitcoin history rewrite कर देगा या हर mining race जीत जाएगा। Bitcoin mining और address hashing में SHA-256 भी इस्तेमाल करता है, लेकिन cited quantum-readiness research में सबसे मजबूत जोखिम public-key signature layer को लेकर है, SHA-256 mining को लेकर नहीं.
सभी coins का quantum-risk profile एक जैसा नहीं है। जब coins spend किए जाते हैं, public keys reveal हो सकती हैं; और address reuse से exposed public keys को catalogue और prioritize करना आसान हो जाता है.
इससे दो अलग planning problems बनती हैं। पहली, जिन coins की public keys पहले से exposed हैं, वे future migration के obvious candidates होंगे। दूसरी, जब user transaction broadcast करता है, तो confirmation से पहले एक window होती है जिसमें public key और intended spend दिखाई दे सकते हैं। अगर भविष्य की quantum machine इसी window में private key recover कर सके, तो attacker competing spend की कोशिश कर सकता है.
आज के estimates यह नहीं दिखाते कि ऐसा अभी संभव है। लेकिन वे यह जरूर बताते हैं कि wallet design, transaction relay, mempool privacy और confirmation timing को post-quantum migration discussion में खतरे के operational होने से पहले शामिल करना चाहिए.
Early preparation का सबसे मजबूत कारण यह है कि post-quantum cryptography अब सिर्फ academic topic नहीं रह गई है। अगस्त 2024 में NIST, यानी अमेरिका के National Institute of Standards and Technology, ने अपने पहले तीन post-quantum cryptography standards final किए और system administrators को जल्द-से-जल्द transition शुरू करने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया.
इन standards में FIPS 203 for ML-KEM key encapsulation, FIPS 204 for ML-DSA digital signatures और FIPS 205 for SLH-DSA stateless hash-based signatures शामिल हैं. NIST ने quantum-vulnerable algorithms से post-quantum digital signatures और key-establishment schemes की तरफ जाने के लिए transition-planning material भी प्रकाशित किया है.
UK National Cyber Security Centre, यानी NCSC, PQC migration को mass technology change बताता है जिसमें कई साल लगेंगे। उसकी early milestones में 2028 तक migration goals define करना और full discovery exercise complete करना शामिल है.
Bitcoin और दूसरी blockchains के लिए algorithm चुनना सिर्फ पहला कदम है। कोई भी post-quantum signature path transaction size limits, verification cost, fee markets, hardware wallets, custody systems, light clients, exchanges, bridges और social consensus के साथ भी fit होना चाहिए।
हर बड़े exchange, custodian, wallet developer, bridge, stablecoin issuer, layer-2 team और treasury को map करना चाहिए कि वे कहां-कहां quantum-vulnerable public-key cryptography पर निर्भर हैं। इस inventory में signing flows, key-storage hardware, backup formats, recovery procedures, multisig policies, smart contracts, bridge validators और long-lived public keys शामिल होने चाहिए।
यह NCSC की recommended early migration work से मेल खाता है: emergency आने से पहले goals define करें और discovery exercise पूरी करें. Bitcoin के लिए खास तौर पर reused addresses, already exposed public keys, older output types, high-value cold wallets और ऐसे hot-wallet flows priority में होने चाहिए जो public keys बार-बार reveal करते हैं.
Wallets और exchanges को address reuse मुश्किल और fresh-address use आसान बनाना चाहिए। Reused या already exposed public keys future quantum-readiness work के सबसे साफ focus areas में हैं.
Infrastructure teams को transaction-broadcast privacy पर भी काम करना चाहिए। अगर future attack model legitimate spend और forged spend की race बनता है, तो visibility घटाना और exposure window छोटा करना तब भी मायने रखेगा जब हर chain post-quantum signatures पर पूरी तरह migrate न हुई हो.
Blockchain teams को post-quantum signature support के लिए credible proposals चाहिए, जिसमें consensus और deployment paths भी साफ हों। Google की disclosure का कहना है कि cryptocurrency communities को quantum attacks possible होने से पहले security और stability सुधारनी चाहिए, जिसमें post-quantum cryptography की तरफ transition work भी शामिल है.
NIST के signature standards useful starting point हैं, automatic Bitcoin upgrade नहीं। FIPS 204 और FIPS 205 digital-signature standards हैं, लेकिन blockchain systems को signature size, verification cost, bandwidth, fee impact, wallet usability, hardware-wallet support और long-term cryptanalytic confidence भी evaluate करना होगा.
Practical transition में एक staged period लग सकता है, जहां existing signatures और post-quantum mechanisms कुछ समय तक साथ-साथ चलें। इससे नए PQC scheme पर अचानक पूरा भरोसा करने का risk घट सकता है और wallets, nodes, exchanges, custodians और users को नया operational model सीखने का समय मिल सकता है।
लेकिन इसकी कीमत भी होगी: signatures बड़े हो सकते हैं, transaction weight बढ़ सकता है, wallet flows ज्यादा जटिल हो सकते हैं और low-fee users पर असर पड़ सकता है। इन trade-offs को live emergency में discover करने से बेहतर है कि pilot programs में पहले मापा जाए।
Operational risk सबसे ज्यादा custody layer में जमा होगा। Exchanges, institutional custodians, ETF-related service providers, stablecoin issuers, bridges और large treasuries को test करना चाहिए कि उनके signing modules, HSMs, hardware wallets, policy engines, audit logs और disaster-recovery procedures post-quantum या staged migration support कर सकते हैं या नहीं।
क्योंकि public guidance PQC migration को years-long change मानती है, इन systems को तब pilot करना चाहिए जब खतरा अभी theoretical है—न कि तब, जब credible attack capability सामने आ जाए.
Cryptographic migration सिर्फ engineering problem नहीं, governance problem भी है। Decentralized networks को users को warning देने, migration support करने, lost keys से निपटने और लंबे समय से exposed funds जो कभी move नहीं होते, उनके बारे में norms चाहिए।
Google का कहना है कि इस research disclosure का उद्देश्य cryptocurrency community को खतरा possible होने से पहले security और stability सुधारने में मदद करना है. Migration rules पर बहस करने का सबसे खराब समय वह होगा जब ecosystem को लगे कि real quantum attack window खुल चुकी है।
सिर्फ headline physical-qubit counts देखने से पूरी तस्वीर नहीं मिलेगी। ज्यादा जरूरी signals हैं: logical qubits, error rates, error-correction overhead, gate depth, Toffoli-gate cost और बड़े scale पर demonstrated fault-tolerant computation.
Standards adoption भी उतना ही महत्वपूर्ण है। NIST initial post-quantum standards finalize कर चुका है, NIST transition planning चल रही है, और NCSC guidance staged migration milestones देती है; इसलिए crypto networks यह मानकर नहीं चल सकते कि consensus और wallet work को अनिश्चित काल तक टाला जा सकता है.
Bitcoin 2033 तक doomed है—ऐसा निष्कर्ष cited sources से नहीं निकलता। और आज Bitcoin-breaking quantum computer मौजूद है—यह भी cited sources नहीं दिखाते. लेकिन risk इतना plausible है कि गंभीर teams को तैयारी अभी शुरू करनी चाहिए।
Bottleneck सिर्फ quantum hardware नहीं है। असली चुनौती standards selection, wallet deployment, custody upgrades, exchange support, fee economics और social consensus की है। अगर industry तब तक इंतजार करती रही जब quantum computer secp256k1 पर लगभग हमला करने लायक हो जाए, तो safe migration के लिए बहुत कम समय बचेगा.
