Designing an Original Character Sheet From a Reference Image

The goal is to create a Character Sheet for one clearly original character that captures the broad visual feeling of the reference image—such as its linework, colour mood, lighting, atmosphere, and composition—without recreating, modifying, or resembling the existing character.

Start with a genuinely new character

The character should have an identity that stands on its own: a new name, personality, outfit concept, and recognisable visual features. Rather than simply changing the reference character’s colours or clothing, build a fresh design around a different combination of shapes, details, and attitude.

Give the character at least one strong signature element, such as:

Use a 4:3 canvas and organise the page so viewers can understand the character quickly. The full-body illustration should be the focal point, supported by smaller studies that reveal the design in more detail.

A clean layout can include:

• A central full-body character view
• Face, hairstyle, or expression close-ups
• Small gesture or pose studies that communicate personality
• Detail panels for clothing, accessories, and key props
• A compact information block with the character’s name, core traits, and mood keywords

Keep the visual hierarchy simple: the main figure should draw attention first, followed by the smaller design callouts and text.

Carry over the mood, not the character

It is appropriate to use the reference as a guide for the overall visual direction—for example, the softness or energy of the linework, the balance of warm and cool colours, the lighting, and the general emotional tone.

However, the new design should clearly depart from the reference in its defining traits. Change the character’s shape language, clothing construction, facial features, accessories, pose language, and personality cues so the finished sheet presents a new creative work with its own identity.

Add Thai display typography that fits the artwork

The character name can be presented in a cute, custom-feeling Thai type style that supports the illustration’s atmosphere. Soft curves, rounded terminals, subtle decorative marks, or small motifs linked to the character’s world can make the title feel integrated with the sheet.

The lettering should remain easy to read and should not compete with the main artwork. A restrained treatment usually works best: let the character remain the visual centre, while the name adds personality and polish.
