How to Create a Consistent AI Character Reference Sheet

Build the prompt around consistency, not just appearance

A character reference sheet has a different job from a conventional portrait. It must show that the same person can be recognized across front, profile, rear, and close-up views. The prompt should therefore define stable traits first—face shape, eye character, hairstyle, body proportions, clothing, expression, and posture—before describing style or mood.

Avoid broad instructions such as “make a beautiful woman.” Instead, specify the visual identity in concrete, repeatable terms: an adult East Asian woman with an oval face, calm almond-shaped eyes, a reserved but confident expression, and long dark hair with natural texture. Keep descriptors compatible with each other; excessive or conflicting facial requirements can cause identity drift.

Specify the sheet layout before adding fine detail

For a production-oriented sheet, state the format and placement clearly:

• Use an ultra-wide canvas, such as 21:9.
• Place full-body turnaround views on one side.
• Request front, three-quarter or side-profile, and back views.
• Require every view to show the full body, identical wardrobe, identical hair, matching proportions, and a neutral standing pose.
• Reserve the other side for a large, centered frontal face close-up.

The close-up should have its own requirements. A straight-on, eye-level framing with the complete face visible is more useful for inspecting facial structure and skin treatment than a dramatic angled portrait.

Lock the character’s visual identity

Repeat the features that must remain unchanged across every panel. This repetition is intentional: it tells the image model which attributes are constraints rather than optional styling ideas.

Useful consistency language includes:

• “same character in every view”
• “same facial identity, hairstyle, clothing, and body proportions”
• “neutral standing posture”
• “full body visible from head to toe”
• “no identity change between views”

If using a reference image, describe it as identity inspiration rather than relying on a vague similarity request. Focus on facial impression, proportions, hair feeling, and temperament, while leaving room for a newly generated professional design sheet.

Make photorealistic skin instructions specific

Photorealism benefits from material detail, but only when it is restrained. Ask for natural semi-matte skin, fine pores, uneven microtexture, and subtle facial vellus hair visible under directional light. Pair those positive requirements with exclusions such as beauty filtering, airbrushed skin, plastic texture, waxiness, and excessive smoothing.

Lighting should support the inspection purpose. Soft directional daylight or cool studio light can reveal form and texture while preserving believable shadow gradients. Limit highlights to a few natural areas—such as the nose bridge, upper cheekbone edge, and lower lip—so the result does not become glossy or overexposed.

Keep wardrobe and styling simple

A character sheet is easier to read when the outfit is minimal and repeated exactly across views. A neutral cardigan, dark high-neck top, wide-leg trousers, and simple shoes create a clear silhouette without introducing distracting props or accessories.

For hair, define color, length, texture, and styling direction. Requests for realistic strands, soft volume, and a contemporary but non-fantastical style are more actionable than simply asking for “detailed hair.”

Use camera instructions that fit each panel

Different panels serve different purposes:

• Full-body turnarounds: A moderate focal length such as 50mm helps maintain natural proportions.
• Face close-up: An 85mm portrait treatment can reduce perspective exaggeration and support facial-detail inspection.

Keep the camera direction explicit for the close-up: horizontal, centered, straight front view, eye level, and minimal distortion.

Add a focused negative prompt

Negative prompting is most useful when it protects the sheet’s core function. Exclude identity changes, childlike features, exaggerated V-line facial structure, anime or doll-like eyes, distorted anatomy, extra fingers, plastic skin, overexposure, cluttered backgrounds, text, logos, and watermarks.

Do not let the exclusion list become a replacement for clear positive direction. The strongest workflow is: define the character, lock what must stay consistent, establish the layout, then rule out the failure modes that would make the sheet unusable.

A practical prompt order

A clean prompt can follow this sequence:

1. Character identity: age range, ethnicity, face shape, eyes, expression, temperament.
2. Body and styling: proportions, hairstyle, clothing, posture.
3. Material realism: skin texture, hair strands, restrained highlights.
4. Lighting and camera: directional lighting, shadow behavior, focal length.
5. Layout: aspect ratio, turnaround positions, close-up placement, background.
6. Consistency rules: same person, same outfit, same proportions in every view.
7. Negative constraints: identity drift, stylization, anatomy errors, text, and clutter.

This structure turns a long creative brief into an image-generation request that is easier to interpret and more likely to produce a coherent character-development reference sheet.
