Anthropic paused two of Claude Startups’ biggest benefits—the free year of Claude Team and a one-time $1,000 API credit—on October 9, just three days after expanding the program. The company said it had underestimated demand: applications reached hundreds of thousands, and the first 48 hours brought 21 times as many as the program had received in the previous five months.

What the expanded program offered
Claude Startups launched in May and had already drawn thousands of participating companies. Its October 6 expansion invited more founders to apply for a package that included a year of Claude Team for up to five Premium seats, a one-time $1,000 API credit, and access to up to $45,000 in discounts and credits through the Claude Startup Stack. The Team offer is for companies new to Claude Team.

The Startup Stack is a collection of offers from independent third-party companies, not a $45,000 payment from Anthropic. Members could also book virtual office hours with Anthropic’s Applied AI team.

A company could apply if it had been founded within the previous five years or had received funding within the previous two years. Venture backing was not required, according to program coverage.

What the pause means for applicants
The pause does not take away benefits that recipients have already claimed. But applications—and approvals for offers that have not yet been claimed—may be reviewed again, and some applicants may not ultimately receive the Team year or API credit.

The pause is limited to those two Anthropic offers. Reporting and the program page say the Startup Stack partner offers and Applied AI office hours remain available to members.

Why applicants objected
Some founders posted on X that they had been approved but lost access to the offer before claiming it. Those posts show the frustration around the change, but they do not establish that Anthropic revoked benefits that had already been claimed.

The reversal highlights a difficult trade-off in startup programs: a broad offer can bring many potential customers into the door quickly, but demand can outstrip what the company is prepared to provide. When approvals are followed by another review, even applicants who have not claimed a benefit may feel that the terms changed after they were accepted. Anthropic’s stated reason for pausing was the unexpected application volume; the available reports do not establish a more detailed explanation of how its eligibility screening handled that surge.
