Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. The technique gives scientists a way to control selected nerve cells with light, helping them investigate how brain circuits work.

How algae research led to optogenetics
The key was a light-sensitive protein called channelrhodopsin, discovered by Hegemann and Nagel in algae. Their work on how algae respond to light revealed a protein that could serve as a switch: researchers could introduce it into nerve cells and use light to change those cells’ activity.

That approach became optogenetics, which combines light and genetics to control the activity of individual nerve cells in a living brain. Instead of only recording which cells are active, researchers can manipulate selected cells and observe what changes.

What optogenetics has revealed about brain circuits
Controlling specific cells lets researchers test how particular circuits contribute to memories, feelings and behavior. This helps move research beyond observing correlations toward investigating how activity in a circuit relates to a function.

The Nobel-recognized work has provided a way to investigate the brain with greater precision. It is a research technique, however—not a general treatment for brain disorders.

Could the technique have medical uses?
Researchers are exploring whether optogenetics could contribute to future treatments, including approaches to restore some vision or address neurological and psychiatric conditions. These are potential applications, not evidence that optogenetics is an established treatment for those conditions.
