2026 Vuelta a España: Carapaz's Reality Check Against Pogačar

With the 2026 Vuelta a España starting in Monaco on 22 August, the start list is stacked with Grand Tour talent. But no shift is more dramatic than the one facing Richard Carapaz. The Ecuadorian climber confirmed his participation in early August, yet simultaneously acknowledged he will not race for the general classification. The reason: a wave of injuries that has gutted his EF Education-EasyPost team. Against the overwhelming favourite Tadej Pogačar, he is pivoting to stage hunting and the mountains jersey.

The Confirmed Start List So Far

Several top Grand Tour riders are on the provisional rosters as of mid-August :

• Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) — Confirmed. Returning to the Vuelta for the first time since his 2019 debut, fresh off his fifth Tour de France title. He is the overwhelming favourite .
• João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) — Confirmed in support of Pogačar, alongside Domen Novak, Pavel Sivakov, Pablo Torres, Kevin Vermaerke and Jay Vine .
• Enric Mas (Movistar) — Listed as a key GC contender on provisional start sheets .
• Wout Van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) — Confirmed participation .
• Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) — Confirmed; the Dane won the green jersey at the 2026 Tour and will target sprints and stage wins .

Why Carapaz Gave Up on GC

Richard Carapaz's original plan was to race for the overall classification at the Vuelta . Speaking to Ecuadorian outlet Primicias, he revealed why the team has had to reconsider: "We wanted to go for the general classification, but we don't have a strong team due to the many injuries; a lot of teammates are recovering" .

Specifically, three teammates underwent knee surgery, and two others suffered injuries — one during a practice ride and another during a race . The depth required to protect a GC leader across three weeks of high mountain stages is simply not there.

Carapaz's own preparation was compromised. He missed the 2026 Giro d'Italia after undergoing surgery for a perineal cyst in early April, requiring a recovery period that left him short of racing days before the Tour . That cyst surgery forced Carapaz to skip the Giro entirely, making the Vuelta his second Grand Tour of the year after the Tour .

The result is stark: Carapaz has effectively abandoned his GC ambitions for this Vuelta .

A Familiar Pivot: Stage Hunting and the Mountains Jersey

This is not the first time Carapaz has faced this situation. At the 2026 Tour de France, with EF similarly depleted, he switched from GC to chasing stage wins and the mountains classification — a strategy that won him the polka-dot jersey at both the 2024 and 2026 editions .

Against Pogačar, Carapaz has been blunt. He told reporters the Slovenian is "impossible to make suffer" at his current level . In that context, his Vuelta plan has three pillars:

1. Target stage wins. Carapaz is strong on long breakaways and punchy summit finishes, where he can win without the burden of a full GC campaign .
2. Compete for the mountains jersey. He already proved he can win that classification against top competition. The mountainous 2026 route is well-suited to his climbing ability .
3. Race aggressively and opportunistically. Rather than marking Pogačar wheel-to-wheel, Carapaz can join early breaks on high-mountain stages, picking up KOM points and fighting for solo victories .

This strategy gives EF Education-EasyPost a realistic path to the podium in Madrid — just not the one they originally planned.

Can Anyone Challenge Pogačar?

The 2026 Vuelta remains the only Grand Tour missing from Pogačar's trophy cabinet . UAE Team Emirates-XRG have built a deep squad around him, including João Almeida as a super-domestique and several strong climbers . On paper, Pogačar is the clear favourite.

Enric Mas, who finished on the podium in 2024 and 2025, represents the most credible GC threat among the confirmed riders . But without a team that can match UAE's depth in the mountains, even Mas will struggle to close the gap.

For Carapaz, the reality is simple. The GC dream is on hold for 2026. But if he can win a stage or two, or another mountains jersey, his Vuelta will still be remembered as a success.
