BOE remained the global leader when all smartphone-panel technologies were included. It shipped about 280 million panels in H1 2026 and held a 25.2% share of the total market, with overall shipments up 7.1% year over year. Samsung Display shipped roughly 170 million smartphone panels in total, up only 0.9%.
Flexible OLED tells a different story. BOE shipped about 81.4 million flexible OLED smartphone panels, a 14.6% year-over-year increase. Samsung’s approximately 120 million panels therefore represented both a larger volume and a substantially faster growth rate.
The comparison points to a clear division in the market. BOE has greater scale across the full smartphone-panel industry, including LCD, while Samsung Display’s strongest momentum is in higher-value flexible OLED applications. Samsung’s H1 total-panel growth was modest because its gains were concentrated in that premium segment.
Apple’s iPhone demand was central to Samsung Display’s H1 performance. Reports attributed the increase to strong sales across the iPhone range and to panel inventory built ahead of upcoming launches.
Apple’s importance extends beyond immediate unit demand. Premium iPhone production requires large volumes of advanced OLED panels, giving suppliers with established high-end manufacturing capabilities a meaningful boost when Apple raises orders. The available data supports Apple demand as a major contributor to Samsung’s growth, although it does not establish that every additional Samsung panel was destined for an iPhone.
The second-half outlook is more favorable for premium flexible OLED than for the smartphone market generally. Counterpoint expects Apple to launch the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and its first foldable iPhone in fall 2026. Its research says panel shipments for those models began in July, while production of the standard iPhone 18 models had not yet started and could be deferred to spring 2027.
These product details remain an expected roadmap rather than a confirmed launch outcome. Still, the reported production schedule suggests that Apple’s premium models could support panel demand before the broader iPhone 18 lineup arrives.
Foldables are another potential growth engine. Counterpoint expects global foldable smartphone-panel shipments to rise about 24% in 2026 to approximately 27.5 million units, with second-half shipments accounting for about 64% of the annual total. The forecast depends heavily on Apple’s procurement ramp, Samsung’s product cycle and follow-on demand from Chinese smartphone manufacturers.
In practical terms, Samsung Display enters H2 with exposure to two high-value demand pools: premium iPhone panels and foldable OLED panels. The forecasts are encouraging, but they should not be treated as guaranteed sales; Apple’s launch timing, procurement decisions and final device demand remain variables.
Samsung Display’s investment-review committee approved structural work for the A7 plant at the Asan 2 complex on August 7, 2026. The company is expected to begin construction orders or bidding in August, move into full-scale construction in 2027 and target completion in early 2028.
The project had been paused since 2021, making the decision a resumption after roughly five years. The site originally broke ground in 2017, according to industry reports.
The precise project cost has not been publicly disclosed. Reports describe the A7 investment as several trillion won.
Samsung Display has not finalized all of the production lines that will be installed at the expanded facility. Industry reports expect A7 to support small- and medium-sized OLED applications, including foldable smartphones and potentially micro-OLED products, while other reporting highlights growing OLED demand from foldable phones, laptops and tablets.
A7 will add room to respond to longer-term demand alongside Samsung Display’s existing Asan operations. The Asan complex also includes the A6 8.6-generation IT OLED facility, which began mass production in 2026.
A7 is not simply a response to one strong half-year. It is part of Samsung Display’s broader plan to invest KRW 67 trillion in display manufacturing through 2040, with Asan positioned as a base for next-generation smartphone OLED, IT OLED and high-resolution microdisplay production.
The timing reflects a strategic calculation. Samsung Display’s H1 results show that premium flexible OLED can grow much faster than the overall smartphone-panel market, while the expected expansion of foldables could create additional demand for technologically demanding panels. Resuming A7 gives the company future capacity flexibility without implying that every production line or customer allocation has already been finalized.
The competitive picture is therefore more nuanced than a simple Samsung-versus-BOE ranking. BOE remains the scale leader across total smartphone panels, but Samsung Display is gaining momentum where premium OLED technology matters most. If Apple’s expected premium and foldable product cycle materializes, and if the foldable market expands as forecast, A7 could become an important part of Samsung’s effort to defend that advantage through the next decade.
