Legacy Edition Features: What's New and Improved

The Legacy Edition goes beyond a simple resolution bump. Aspyr added a suite of quality-of-life improvements that bring the 15-year-old game closer to modern action-RPG standards.

Resolution and Framerate – The remaster targets up to 4K resolution and 60 fps on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Switch 2. The original Nintendo Switch is capped at 30 fps and does not support local co-op .

Co-op Play – Supports 3-player online co-op and 2-player local split-screen co-op. Split-screen is not available on the original Switch .

Solo Play – Fully playable single-player with three characters (Eradan, Andriel, Farin). New solo-specific features include character hot-swapping, improved enemy target locking, an enhanced UI that shows party health, mana, and XP bars, an improved autosave system, gyro controls on PS5 and Switch/Switch 2, and visual-fidelity upgrades .

Additional Enhancements – The remaster also includes the ability to trigger secrets (see hidden caches found by other characters), refined enemy locking, and additional save slots .

Original Critical Reception (2011)

The original War in the North received mixed reviews. Its Metacritic scores stand at 61/100 on Xbox 360 and 63/100 on PS3, with a slightly higher 66/100 on PC . While critics praised its authentic Tolkien atmosphere and co-op structure, common complaints included repetitive combat, dull level design, weak storytelling, uninspired characters, and game-breaking bugs . IGN gave it a 7/10, calling it "safe and a bit bland" . Commercially, it was a disappointment, partly attributed to launching near Skyrim, Modern Warfare 3, and Batman: Arkham City .
