The final margin of victory was the closest since the 2011 race and capped off a strategic masterclass from the Japanese manufacturer.
For much of the race, the lead was a revolving door between Toyota, BMW, and Cadillac. The No. 8 Toyota initially looked like the team’s lead contender, but its challenge was compromised when a brake drum mounting change cost it valuable time in the morning hours . This allowed the sister No. 7 car to move ahead.
The race was not decided until the final hours. As the clock ticked down, the No. 7 Toyota cycled into the lead for good during the 22nd hour. There was intra-team friction, however, as the No. 8 car reportedly did not immediately follow team instructions to swap positions . Kamui Kobayashi then took over for the final stint and was tasked with holding off the hard-charging No. 20 BMW of Robin Frijns. He did so masterfully, taking the checkered flag by just over ten seconds
.
In stark contrast to some chaotic runnings of the great race, the 2026 edition was notable for its long period of uninterrupted green-flag racing. The first and only safety car of the race was not deployed until nearly eight hours had passed, when the No. 54 Vista AF Corse Ferrari and No. 88 Proton Competition Ford Mustang were involved in an incident at the Forest Esses shortly before midnight . This single intervention bunched up a 14-car lead pack and reset the strategic chessboard, setting the stage for the final-act showdown
.
Ferrari entered the 2026 race as the three-time defending winner, having won in 2023, 2024, and 2025 . This year, however, was a weekend to forget for the Italian marque. Their factory entries were nowhere near the podium battle. The No. 51 Ferrari 499P of Pier Guidi, Calado, and Giovinazzi was the highest-placed prancing horse in fifth position. The sister No. 50 factory car, driven by Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina, and Nicklas Nielsen, retired from the race and did not finish
. The privately entered, yellow No. 83 AF Corse Ferrari, which had won the race the previous year, finished seventh
.
While Toyota took the top step, BMW announced its return to the top tier of endurance racing in spectacular fashion. Having secured pole position with the No. 15 car, the Bavarian manufacturer was a factor throughout the race, although the polesitting car retired late on with mechanical issues .
The No. 20 BMW M Hybrid V8 became the star of the team, engaging in a race-long duel with Toyota and falling just short of becoming the first LMDh-spec Hypercar to win Le Mans .
Cadillac also put in a strong showing with the Hertz Team JOTA entry. The No. 12 V-Series.R of Delétraz, Stevens, and Nato was in the lead battle for much of the race and ultimately finished a competitive fourth, only 32 seconds behind the winner .
The victory was a landmark one for the drivers of the No. 7 car. For Kamui Kobayashi and Mike Conway, it was a second Le Mans victory, their first having come together in 2021 . For their teammate, former Formula 1 driver Nyck de Vries, it was a first-ever win in the world’s most famous endurance race
