The studio described its purpose as "to make the world more characterful," and produced work ranging from TV commercials and design systems to social campaigns and custom illustrations. Animade was known for projects such as its iOS game Ready Steady Bang, a twitchy dueling game with an 8-bit cowboy aesthetic, and its quirky short film Chronemics.
Animade's entire team joined Duolingo's in-house Design Studio, which the company describes as a key driver of innovative and engaging product development. The team will contribute to product innovation, growth experiments, and creative initiatives across the company.
The acquisition expands Duolingo's creative presence into the United Kingdom for the first time, supplementing its existing creative operations in Detroit.
Duolingo's announcement notably framed the acquisition as a bet on human creative talent, even as the company embraces AI. Duolingo stated that "as AI accelerates how software is built, investing in world-class human design talent remains a critical differentiator" for building experiences that keep learners motivated. One LinkedIn post by a Duolingo employee characterized the acquisition by noting that a company valued at approximately $40 billion was making that statement.
Mig Reyes, Duolingo's Head of Design, said:
"Great products aren't defined only by what they do, but by how they make people feel. Motion design has become a core part of how we help learners understand, enjoy, and return to Duolingo every day. Animade has built a reputation for exceptional creative craft, and bringing their team into Duolingo is an investment in the people and capabilities that will help us build even better learning experiences."
Jen Judd, Co-Founder of Animade, said:
"Since day one, Animade has been on a mission to share joy through thoughtful design and animation. I can't think of a more exciting place to continue that mission than at Duolingo. We've always believed it's the thoughtful moments that leave a lasting impression, and that great design and bringing personality into every pixel can make technology feel more human. We're thrilled to join a company that shares our passion for creativity, craft, and building products that genuinely bring people joy."
