Google’s Gemini Notebook Fall Study Updates: Live Voice, Lecture Recording and Interactive Quizzes

Google’s fall-semester Gemini Notebook update is centered on a simple idea: make study materials easier to question, review and reuse on a phone without losing the connection to the original sources. The renamed NotebookLM product is adding live mobile voice conversations, lecture recording and new study-generation formats. 69

Talk to a notebook in real time

Gemini Notebook is rolling out real-time voice conversations in its Android and iOS apps in nearly 100 languages. Rather than treating the interaction as a general-purpose AI chat, Google says responses remain grounded in the sources added to that notebook. That means a student can ask for step-by-step help on assigned readings, notes or other uploaded materials and keep the answer tied to that study set. 67

The experience is designed to be conversational: users can speak follow-up questions and interrupt while Gemini Notebook is responding. Google said the rollout starts with Google AI Ultra subscribers who are 18 or older, with Google AI Pro users and others to follow. Availability may therefore vary by plan and timing. 46

Record lectures and turn them into notebook sources

A mobile audio recorder is also being added to Gemini Notebook. Google said it would arrive the following week, enabling users to record lectures, spoken notes or ideas and bring that audio into a notebook as source material. Once added, the recording can sit alongside other sources and be used in chats and cited responses. 46

For students, the practical benefit is a more continuous workflow: capture a lecture, combine it with slides or handwritten notes, then ask focused questions from one source collection rather than searching across separate files.

Study from one interactive overview

Google is introducing Interactive Learning Overviews, which bring multiple study outputs together in a single experience. The format combines a summary with infographics, quizzes and flashcards, giving learners several ways to review the same notebook material. 613

This is distinct from a conventional recap: the aim is to move from an explanation into active recall and quick visual review without manually creating each resource.

More quiz formats and follow-up help

Quiz generation is expanding beyond a single question style. Gemini Notebook will support short-answer, multiple-select and fill-in-the-blank questions. After answering, users can continue into a chat for explanations or additional practice. 613

That follow-up loop matters because a quiz result alone identifies an error but does not necessarily explain it. Keeping the discussion connected to the notebook’s sources gives students a way to ask why an answer was wrong and request a clearer walkthrough.

Short source-based video summaries

Google is also adding Shorts, brief video overviews intended for fast review. Reports describing the update characterize them as roughly 60-second, source-based summaries; the related video-overview capability is expanding to more than 80 languages. 313

These summaries are positioned as a quick refresher rather than a replacement for the underlying notes, readings or lecture recordings.

What the update says about Google’s education strategy

Student offer: Google AI Pro in the U.S., AI Plus elsewhere

One detail is easy to misstate. Google’s one-year student offer is not universally Google AI Pro. Eligible college students in the United States can receive one year of Google AI Pro, which Google values at $19.99 per month.
