The Story Behind Epic's Free Game Program
What started as a limited-time holiday promotion in December 2018 has become one of the longest-running giveaways in PC gaming . Epic launched the initiative with titles like Subnautica and Super Meat Boy, and the response was so strong that the company extended it into a permanent weekly fixture .
Here are a few milestones from the program's history:
2018: The Epic Games Store launched on December 6, with the first free games arriving on December 12. Initially, one game was offered every two weeks .
June 2019: The schedule accelerated to a new free game every week. On weeks when a title carried a mature rating, an additional game was sometimes included so younger audiences could still claim something .
2020: Epic gave away 103 free games in a single year, generating more than 479 million downloads. The total retail value of those titles was estimated around $1,455 .
By early 2024: Researchers calculated that the store had distributed approximately 393 free games with a combined value exceeding $10,000 .
The program serves a clear strategic purpose: attract users to the Epic Games Store and build a large, active user base to compete with Steam's dominance . Games are typically refreshed every Thursday at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET, and once you click "Get," they stay in your library forever—no subscription required .
For anyone building a PC game collection without spending a dime, setting a weekly reminder to check the store on Thursday mornings remains one of the easiest habits in gaming.
