The free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo is now available on Nintendo Switch 2. It lets players try the opening of the game, test its weapon types and hunt locally with others—but it does not support online multiplayer.

Release date and what’s included
Capcom announced the demo on October 15, 2026. It launched on October 19 Pacific time and October 20 in the UK, with digital pre-orders opening on the same date.

The demo covers the story from character creation through Chapter 1-3, “To the Forest,” and includes all 14 weapon types. Players can create a Hunter and Palico, though available reporting does not spell out every customization option.

Local multiplayer, not online co-op
The Switch 2 demo supports local multiplayer, but not online multiplayer. That means the demo itself does not offer online crossplay.

SOS Flares are also reported to call NPC Support Hunters, with one report specifying up to three. These are not online players joining a hunt.
13
That demo limitation is different from the announced full game: Nintendo lists online cross-platform play, and reporting on the Switch 2 release says local hunts can include up to four players.

Save transfer: what to know
Demo save data can carry into the full game. Available reporting gives two conditions: use the same user account and do not already have a full-game save.
17
The sources do not clearly explain whether unfinished and completed demo progress transfer in exactly the same way, or which settings and options carry over. If you want to use the reported save-transfer route, check your account and existing save before starting the full game.
A preview before the December release
The full Switch 2 version is scheduled for December 4, 2026—about six and a half weeks after the demo’s October 19 Pacific-time launch.
18
42 That gives players time to try the opening and get a hands-on sense of the Switch 2 version before deciding whether to buy it. A demo is still only a preview, not a guarantee of how every part of the finished game will perform.
Nintendo’s announcement says the full Switch 2 release includes all title-update content.
41 Coverage of the port has described the optimization work as a lengthy process.

The clearest takeaway: this is a substantial taste of the opening adventure, with local co-op and save transfer, but it is not an online multiplayer trial.
