The privacy dispute around Meta’s Ray-Ban and Oakley AI glasses has expanded beyond the familiar fear of someone secretly filming in public. The sharper question is whether a pair of ordinary-looking glasses should be able to use a camera for AI interpretation without giving nearby people a visible notice.
The key issue: recording is not the same as AI camera use
Meta describes the front-facing capture LED as a bystander signal for photos and videos captured for the wearer’s gallery. Meta says those photos and videos remain privately stored on the glasses unless the wearer chooses to import or share them.

But reporting based on the Ray-Ban FAQs says the LED does not necessarily illuminate when a wearer uses camera-based AI—for example, to ask about a plant or landmark. Meta’s distinction is that this is AI processing rather than conventional photo or video capture.

That distinction is precisely what opponents contest. A bystander may not care whether an image becomes a saved video, a transient AI input, or another form of processing: in each case, the device may be directed at a person or place and machine-interpreted without a clear, visible cue. The concern becomes especially acute if future capabilities enable biometric inference or identification.
Meta’s response focuses on covert recording
Meta has strengthened protections intended to prevent users from hiding the LED during standard photo or video capture. An update stops the camera if the capture light is covered after recording has started, closing a previous route in which someone could begin recording and then obstruct the indicator.

The company has also disabled cameras on thousands of devices after detecting tampering with recording indicators; it said the enforcement represented less than 0.1% of Meta AI glasses sold.

These steps matter for deterring hidden recording. They do not, however, resolve the separate criticism that AI camera use may occur without the recording light activating. That is why the public debate has become a question of ambient machine observation, not just whether the LED can be physically concealed.

Why the stakes have grown
The glasses are no longer a small experimental category. Reporting has said that about 7 million pairs were sold in 2025, making bystander notice and social expectations a mass-market issue rather than a niche gadget concern.

Critics also argue that the form factor changes the social calculation. A phone camera is conspicuous when held up; camera-equipped eyewear can look like ordinary eyewear. A small blinking indicator may be difficult to notice, understand or interpret in a crowded setting. ZuckOff offers awareness, not proof
Polish developer Paweł Szydłowski created ZuckOff, an app that scans Bluetooth signals and can alert a user when it detects signatures associated with Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta and other camera glasses. It may also estimate a device’s proximity.

Its limitation is essential: detecting a Bluetooth signal does not show that the glasses are recording, running an AI query, pointed at a particular person or detectable in every state. The app itself says glasses advertise most strongly while powering on, pairing or leaving their case.

Lawsuits and facial-recognition fears
A proposed class action in San Francisco alleges that Meta’s privacy assurances about the glasses were deceptive. That case remains an allegation, not a court finding.

The policy debate now turns on the safeguards that should apply to consumer eyewear: more conspicuous notice, clearer limits on AI camera use around people, consent-based rules in sensitive venues, restrictions on biometric features and enforceable privacy standards.
