OlaLuz connects the Dominican Republic directly to Florida on the U.S. East Coast . It strengthens network capacity and resilience between the Caribbean and the U.S. East Coast, linking to Google Cloud regions in South Carolina and Virginia
.
Google is adding a new branch of the Firmina subsea cable that will land directly in the Dominican Republic. Firmina was originally built to connect North and South America; this branch extends its high-capacity reach into the Caribbean .
The Dominican Republic becomes the central interconnection hub of Americas Connect. All three new cables (Alisios, Canoa, OlaLuz) land there, as does the new Firmina branch. President Luis Rodolfo Abinader Corona stated that the Dominican Republic will serve as an "integral node" in the expanding digital ecosystem, bridging the digital divide and driving tech-based economic opportunity .
The Americas Connect architecture creates three diverse rings — Pacific Coast, Caribbean Sea, and Atlantic Ocean — providing redundant, geographically separated paths between cloud regions, ensuring connectivity even if one route is disrupted . The systems significantly strengthen network capacity between the Caribbean and the U.S. East Coast, and the Canoa–Nuvem–Sol combination provides a resilient path from Latin America and the Caribbean to both Europe and North America
. These investments build on Google's previous subsea cables in the region, including Curie, Nuvem, and Sol
