What Microsoft Edge’s New Developer Features Mean for Web Developers

Microsoft’s latest web-development updates span performance measurement, debugging, AI-agent interactions and text editing. The practical distinction is availability: some capabilities are documented in Edge releases or DevTools, some are intended for experimentation, and the proposed native menu element is not yet a feature to rely on in production. 16333940

Measure slow single-page app interactions

Traditional page-load metrics do not tell the whole story for a single-page app, where a user can move between views without loading a new document. Edge’s Performance API adds two entry types to help developers inspect these transitions: soft-navigation reports interaction-initiated, same-document history changes, and interaction-contentful-paint reports new contentful paints in parts of a page changed by an interaction. 40

Edge’s release notes also describe soft-navigation heuristics for collecting performance metrics in single-page apps. JavaScript Self-Profiling markers provide context about browser work between JavaScript samples, including activities such as styling, layout, painting and garbage collection. Replay and edit network requests in DevTools

The Network tool’s Resend command sends a captured request again without reloading the page. That makes it useful for checking how a request behaves when repeated. 18

These controls make request debugging more convenient; they do not make the underlying network connection faster. Build richer text interactions with OpaqueRange

OpaqueRange represents a live span of text inside a text-based <input> or <textarea>. Developers can use ranges to build text-specific interactions in form controls, such as positioning related UI or applying highlights, without exposing the internals of the control’s text nodes. Test the Web Install API carefully

The Web Install API lets a site request installation of another web app through the asynchronous navigator.install() function, using the browser’s built-in installation experience. Native menu element remains a plan

Microsoft has also outlined a native <menu> element intended to offer built-in menu behavior. It is a planned feature, so developers should not treat it as generally available or build production behavior around it until support is confirmed. 1
