RuneScape has entered a new genre—and new living rooms. RuneScape: Dragonwilds is Jagex’s standalone open-world survival and crafting game set in the RuneScape universe, rather than an expansion to the persistent MMORPG. Its version 1.0 launch on September 15, 2026 made it the first RuneScape game released on consoles in the franchise’s roughly 25-year history.

What kind of game is Dragonwilds?
Dragonwilds takes place on Ashenfall, a previously unknown continent where dragons have awakened. Players gather materials, construct shelters, craft equipment, develop skills, explore, and uncover the tools needed to confront the Dragon Queen. It can be played alone or cooperatively with a party of up to four players.

That premise shares RuneScape’s world, creatures, and skill-focused identity, but its structure is different from the MMORPG. Instead of joining one persistent online world, players take on a self-contained cooperative survival adventure built around exploration, progression, combat, and base-building.

Jagex also introduced dedicated servers during the Early Access period. Those servers raise the maximum group size from the regular four-player format to six players, although the studio noted that some enemy-scaling systems were initially capped at four.

The big change: RuneScape on consoles
Dragonwilds left Early Access with a simultaneous release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. On PC, it is available through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Jagex Launcher.

The significance is larger than a new platform listing. The launch marks RuneScape’s first appearance on console platforms, ending a long period in which the franchise was centered on PC.

Cross-play is supported across the released platforms, so players are not confined to groups using the same hardware. Switch 2 players can also use Nintendo Game Chat, giving the co-op game a handheld and platform-integrated voice-chat option.

What is included in version 1.0?
The console editions did not arrive as limited versions of the game. They include the updates made available during Early Access, while the 1.0 release also delivered the fourth major update, Scorned Wilderness, to every platform.

Most importantly for the game’s narrative, Scorned Wilderness brings the opening Kuldra Saga to a conclusion. That gives the full release a clearer endpoint than the game had at the start of its Early Access period.

From Early Access to a larger audience
Dragonwilds first entered Steam Early Access in April 2025. Jagex used that period to add new content and systems before the full release, including regions such as Fellhollow and Dowdun Reach, as well as dedicated-server support.

The result is a more substantial launch package across all platforms: players on console begin with the body of content that PC players received through Early Access, plus the Scorned Wilderness update.

Why Dragonwilds matters for RuneScape
Dragonwilds is a test of how far RuneScape can stretch beyond its MMORPG roots without leaving its identity behind. Its survival-and-crafting format retains the franchise’s familiar emphasis on gathering, skills, creatures, and fantasy adventure, while presenting them in a format designed for solo play and small cooperative groups.

Its simultaneous console and PC release is equally important. Rather than treating consoles as delayed ports, Jagex launched the same 1.0 build across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 with cross-play enabled.

For prospective players, the practical takeaway is straightforward: Dragonwilds is the RuneScape universe reframed as a co-op survival game, and its 1.0 launch is the franchise’s first broad console entry point—not a replacement for the long-running MMORPG.
