The platform is designed to provide immediate feedback, identify opportunities to improve marks and guide students through curriculum-specific material. It can also interpret handwritten answers, a feature intended to make it useful for subjects such as mathematics and chemistry.
That assessment focus is central to Medly’s pitch. A general AI assistant may explain a concept, but an exam tutor must also help a student understand how an answer would be judged and what changes could improve performance.
Medly launched in February 2025 and says it has surpassed 400,000 users in the UK. The company also reports that students use the platform for about an hour per day on average.
Those figures show substantial early engagement, but they do not by themselves establish that the product improves grades. Medly has reported GCSE-score improvements among users, including figures shared by its investors, but these remain company or investor claims rather than independently established results.
The more important test is still under way: Medly is studying academic impact with more than 1,000 students. Until that work produces transparent, independently assessable evidence, the strongest conclusion is that the platform has achieved meaningful reach and usage—not that its causal effect on attainment has been proven.

Medly is also developing additional educational features, including tools aimed at higher-education preparation. These products could make the platform more useful across a student’s education journey, although their effectiveness will need to be tested rather than assumed.
The company has begun expanding into the United States with SAT preparation. It plans to add preparation for the AP and ACT exams by the end of the year.
This international move creates a product challenge as well as a market opportunity. Exam tutoring depends on accurate content, marking conventions and guidance that match the relevant curriculum and assessment system. Medly’s investment in proprietary marking and pedagogy models is intended to address that problem, but performance across different exams and student groups will be an important measure of whether the approach transfers successfully.
Medly’s founders are building around a familiar inequality in education: high-quality private tutoring can offer individual attention, but its cost can place it out of reach for many families. The company’s thesis is that AI can deliver some of that personalised support at much greater scale.
Scale alone, however, is not enough. For AI tutoring to make a credible contribution, it needs to be affordable, dependable and aligned with the exams students actually take. It also needs to show that improvements are not limited to already motivated or higher-performing users.
That makes Medly’s research programme as significant as its user growth. The $8 million round will help the startup reach more learners and build more specialised AI, but the decisive evidence will be whether those tools produce measurable gains across a broad range of students.
