Gemini Call for Me Can Handle a Business Call—If You’re in Google’s Early Preview

Google’s experimental Call for Me feature lets Gemini do more than dial a business: it can pursue a routine request through the phone conversation. The user starts the task in the Gemini app, remains able to follow the call and can step in if needed. 712

Who can use the early preview?

The preview began rolling out on September 24 to eligible adults in the United States using English. It requires a Pixel 11 device, a paid Gemini or Google AI subscription, the Gemini mobile app and enrollment in the Phone by Google public beta. What happens during a call?

You give Gemini a task in its app, such as asking a store about an item or changing a reservation. Gemini calls the business using your number and identifies itself as an AI calling on your behalf. It can work through automated menus, wait on hold and speak with an employee. The intended tasks include checking business hours, product availability and service quotes; asking a store to hold an item; and booking, confirming or managing appointments and reservations. How is this different from Google’s earlier calling tools?

Google has explored AI conversations with businesses since Duplex, including appointment booking by phone. Hold for Me waits when a user’s call is on hold, while Direct My Call helps a user navigate automated menus. Google has also introduced AI business-calling in Search for questions such as pricing and availability. This remains an early experiment, not a generally available calling service. CNET reports that it is designed not to make payments or share credit-card numbers, so a task requiring those details may need the user to take over.
