Apple’s next entry-level earbuds may arrive sooner than expected. Bloomberg reporting cited by MacRumors says Apple could announce two AirPods 5 models at its expected Wednesday, September 9, 2026 iPhone event: one standard version and another with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). 1718

That timing would follow the same broad pattern as AirPods 4, which Apple introduced on September 9, 2024. But the most important caveat is that Apple has not officially announced AirPods 5, its launch date, specifications or pricing.

What is reportedly coming

• A standard AirPods 5 model without ANC
• A higher-priced AirPods 5 model with Active Noise Cancellation

The two-model plan comes from reporting attributed to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and is reinforced by references found in the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate. 1417

How the timing compares with AirPods 4

At present, reporting does not establish how AirPods 5 will differ from AirPods 4 beyond the expected generational update. There are no solid, source-backed details on changes to the design, chip, audio quality, battery life, charging case, health features or software capabilities.

MacRumors notes that AirPods 5 could use an updated H3 chip, potentially improving sound quality and latency, but presents that as a possibility rather than a confirmed specification. 14

Pricing and availability are also unresolved. Even if Apple announces the earbuds on September 9, the announcement date would not necessarily be the shipping date.

The camera-equipped AirPods are a separate project

The more unusual camera-equipped AirPods should not be confused with the reported AirPods 5 refresh. Apple’s longer-term camera AirPods project is associated with the internal codename B798 and is reportedly still targeted for 2027. 58

The reported purpose is also different. Rather than serving primarily as a new audio model, the camera-equipped earbuds are intended to provide Siri or Visual Intelligence with information about the wearer’s surroundings. A short demonstration video reportedly appeared inside the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate. In it, a person wearing AirPods holds up a book, while the accompanying Visual Intelligence message describes saving something the wearer sees for later. 16

The leak suggests an AI “see and understand” use case, but it does not prove that the product is ready for sale. Reports published after the video surfaced continued to place the B798 project in 2027. 58

Not a conventional photo or video camera

Current reporting describes the sensors as a way to provide low-resolution environmental input to an AI assistant, not as a user-facing camera for taking ordinary photos or recording video. There is no reliable indication of a viewfinder, social-media camera workflow or conventional photo mode. 7839
