Naughty Dog has reached a notable milestone on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet: the studio says its “very ambitious” cinematic shoot has wrapped. The August 31 update included an image of lead actor Tati Gabrielle in performance-capture gear, but it did not announce a release date or confirm the game’s appearance at Sony’s upcoming State of Play.

The clearest reading is that a major part of the game’s story-performance production is complete. It is not the same as saying the entire game is finished.
What the August 31 milestone confirms
Naughty Dog has completed the main cinematic and performance-capture shoot for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Gabrielle, who plays protagonist Jordan A. Mun, was shown in a motion-capture suit with a prop weapon in the studio update.

Performance capture supplies the acting and movement used in story scenes, but a game still needs that material to be processed, animated, integrated with gameplay and tested. Additional recording sessions or voice pickups can also happen later. Post-capture work may include animation refinement, programming, lighting, cinematics integration, polishing and bug fixing.

So the milestone tells us that the project has moved forward, particularly on its narrative production. It does not establish that development is complete, that the game has entered certification or that launch is imminent.
The game has been in development since 2020
PlayStation announced Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet on December 12, 2024, describing it as a new franchise in development for PlayStation 5. The announcement also said production had been underway since 2020.

That long development period helps explain why the capture wrap is attracting attention. Naughty Dog has revealed very little since the announcement, so even a behind-the-scenes production photograph provides a useful—if limited—indication of progress.
The studio has not yet shown an extended gameplay demonstration, and the official information remains focused on the game’s premise, protagonist and creative direction rather than detailed systems or a launch plan.

Story and setting: Jordan A. Mun on Sempiria
The player character is Jordan A. Mun, a dangerous bounty hunter portrayed by Tati Gabrielle. Jordan becomes stranded on Sempiria, a distant planet whose communication with the outside universe disappeared hundreds of years ago. According to PlayStation, anyone who travelled there to investigate its history was never heard from again, and Jordan hopes to become the first person in more than 600 years to escape the planet’s orbit.

The revealed concept is a science-fiction adventure with a retro-futurist identity. Reporting on the reveal describes an alternate-history setting in which space travel existed from 1986, with the main story taking place roughly 2,000 years later.
18
Beyond that foundation, Naughty Dog has kept much of the story under wraps. The available material establishes the isolation of Sempiria and Jordan’s survival-and-escape premise, but it does not yet explain the full role of the planet’s history, its religions or the wider conflict.
Neil Druckmann and the score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
Neil Druckmann is directing the project at Naughty Dog, while Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are composing its score.

Their involvement reinforces the game’s cinematic presentation, but it should not be mistaken for evidence about its gameplay structure or release schedule. Naughty Dog has not published enough detail to draw firm conclusions about how exploration, combat and narrative progression will work.
Is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet coming in 2027?
2027 is a reported target, not an announced release window. An industry insider has claimed that Sony and Naughty Dog are aiming for 2027, while other reporting has narrowed the speculation toward the middle or latter part of that year. Neither Naughty Dog nor Sony has confirmed a date or even an official release window.

40
The completed cinematic shoot makes a 2027 launch seem possible, but it cannot determine the schedule by itself. The remaining production stages can be substantial, especially for a large narrative game with extensive animation, gameplay integration, testing, localization and certification requirements.

The safest current conclusion is therefore:
Intergalactic may be targeting 2027, but there is no confirmed release date, and the motion-capture wrap is not a launch announcement.
Could it appear at the September 3 State of Play?
Sony has confirmed a September 3 State of Play featuring updates and announcements from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners. The presentation is also set to include an extended look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation, but Sony has not published a complete list of featured games.

That has led to speculation that Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet could return with a gameplay trailer or another substantial update. However, neither Sony nor Naughty Dog has named the game as part of the event. Reports and social-media posts remain speculation rather than confirmation.

Until an official lineup or broadcast segment appears, the State of Play should be treated as a possibility—not a scheduled Intergalactic showcase.
What the update means for players
The August 31 announcement gives fans three useful pieces of information:
- Production is advancing: Naughty Dog has completed a major cinematic-performance phase.
- The game is not finished: Capture completion leaves considerable development and testing work.
- The timeline remains uncertain: 2027 is a reported target, while the official position is still that no release date or window has been announced.
For now, the strongest evidence points to a project moving deeper into production rather than one ready for release. The next genuinely informative update would be official gameplay footage, a release window from Sony or Naughty Dog, or both.
