iOS 27 Siri AI: What Changes—and Why It Is Missing From EU iPhones

iOS 27 marks a major shift for Siri: Apple is rolling out a more capable AI assistant, with a staged launch beginning September 14, 2026. The most important limitation is geographic rather than software-version related: people in the European Union will not get Siri AI at launch on iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch—even though supported Mac and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU can access it. 212

What Siri AI adds in iOS 27

Apple describes Siri AI as a rebuilt assistant layer with new ways to continue and revisit conversations. Its launch features include a dedicated Siri AI app for conversations, expanded Visual Intelligence, integrated writing tools, and a Siri mode in the iPhone Camera app. Apple says those advanced capabilities will not be available on EU iPhones and iPads at launch. 12

The rollout is not a simple upgrade for every device that can run iOS 27. Siri AI and Apple Intelligence require newer hardware; reported compatibility includes iPhone 16 models and later, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, plus specified iPad and Mac models. 24

Google Gemini’s role

Apple has turned to Google Gemini as part of the Siri AI effort, while Siri remains Apple’s interface and the feature remains subject to Apple’s own device, language and regional availability rules. 24

For buyers, the practical point is that Gemini’s involvement does not make Siri AI available on every iPhone or in every market. Hardware eligibility and local rollout restrictions still determine whether the new experience appears.

Why Siri AI is unavailable on EU iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch

Apple says it cannot ship Siri AI in the EU with iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 because of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The company says regulators did not accept its proposals for allowing other virtual assistants to work safely alongside Siri AI. 12

Apple Watch is affected because Siri AI in watchOS 27 requires a paired iPhone that already has Siri AI. With the iPhone feature absent in the EU, the watch feature cannot be enabled there either. 12

Apple’s position: interoperability could expose sensitive controls

Apple argues that the Commission’s interpretation of DMA interoperability obligations would require it to give competing assistants access comparable to Siri AI’s access to sensitive data and actions. Apple says this could include access related to messages, files, purchases and cross-app actions, creating privacy and security risks. 1214

The company says it proposed a “Trusted System Agent” approach—an intermediary intended to provide protected, user-controlled access for competing assistants—along with an 18-month rollout plan. Apple says EU regulators rejected its proposed solutions. 125

The European Commission’s position: the DMA does not prohibit the launch

The Commission disputes Apple’s characterization of the situation. According to Reuters, regulators said Apple sought an 18-month exemption from its DMA obligations and that the DMA itself does not block Siri AI from launching in Europe. From the Commission’s perspective, withholding the feature is Apple’s decision, not a legal necessity. 1

That leaves a clear policy disagreement: Apple frames the required interoperability as unsafe without stronger safeguards, while the Commission views workable interoperability for competing assistants as a competition requirement.

Why Macs and Apple Vision Pro are different

Apple’s EU announcement draws a platform line: Siri AI is unavailable initially on iOS and iPadOS, while EU users can access it on macOS 27 and visionOS 27 when their devices are set to a supported language. 12

This creates an unusual split inside Apple’s ecosystem. An eligible EU customer may use Siri AI on a Mac or Apple Vision Pro but not on an iPhone, iPad or dependent Apple Watch. 1216

What EU mobile users get instead

EU iPhone and iPad users still receive iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, but not the new Siri AI layer. At launch, that means no dedicated Siri AI conversation app, expanded Visual Intelligence experience, integrated writing tools or Siri mode in Camera on those platforms. 12

When could Siri AI come to EU iPhones and iPads?

There is no announced date. Apple has said it has no timeline for Siri AI availability on iOS and iPadOS in the EU, so claims about a specific iOS 27 update or a 2027 release remain speculation. 1230

There is precedent for an eventual resolution: Apple delayed Apple Intelligence on EU iPhones and iPads, then began rolling it out in April 2025. But that earlier rollout does not establish a schedule for Siri AI, because the current dispute centers on deep assistant interoperability and access to system capabilities. 3412

For now, the practical answer is simple: eligible users outside the restriction can watch for the staged language and device rollout, while EU iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch owners will need to wait for Apple and EU regulators to find a path both sides accept.
