CATL is targeting small-batch production of all-solid-state battery cells in 2027. That would be a step toward testing production processes and putting cells into vehicles, not a launch at mass-market scale. Chairman Robin Zeng has rated the technology at TRL 4 on a nine-level readiness scale and said installation in around one million vehicles before 2030 is very unlikely.

What must change between TRL 4 and 2027?
CATL chief scientist Wu Kai has set a goal of reaching TRL 7 or 8 by 2027, when pilot production and real-world validation could become possible. That is a target, not the cells’ demonstrated status today. Even successful vehicle trials would leave a further question: can CATL manufacture cells consistently, in large volumes and at an acceptable cost?

The distinction matters when reading adoption forecasts. A small number of vehicles using pilot cells before 2030 would not contradict Zeng’s warning about the much larger, million-vehicle threshold. Early applications may be limited to premium vehicles while engineering constraints and costs remain high.

How much pilot capacity is reported?
Shanghai Metals Market (SMM) has described plans for roughly 2 GWh of pilot or prototype capacity at Yibin, with equipment commissioning targeted for the second half of 2026 and small-batch trials in 2027. A separate SMM report describes a 5 GWh sulfide-based pilot line at Hefei and says it was commissioned in May 2025. The reports concern different sites; they do not establish how many qualified automotive cells either line can deliver. SMM’s accounts also differ on Yibin’s commissioning status, so its operational progress should not be treated as settled.

Nameplate capacity is a measure of a line’s intended output, not proof of its yield, reliability or sales. For all-solid-state cells, reported challenges include managing the interface between solid materials and translating promising cells into repeatable vehicle-grade production. Sulfide-electrolyte materials add a cost hurdle: reporting on Gotion’s work identifies the solid electrolyte, particularly lithium sulfide, as a major cost component. Those figures are not a disclosed cost for CATL’s future cells.

Do rival 2027 plans change the outlook?
BYD has likewise been reported to target small batches in 2027, with larger-scale output around 2030; Geely has also pointed to 2027 pilot production. These roadmaps reinforce the difference between starting a production process and supplying affordable batteries to a broad EV market. The useful milestones to watch are qualified cell output, sustained yields, vehicle performance and credible costs—not the pilot-line opening alone.
