Archetype Entertainment’s Exodus is a single-player, third-person sci-fi action RPG built around exploration, squad combat, companion relationships and the consequences of relativistic time dilation. It will launch on April 7, 2027, for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. 41147
The latest Gamescom Opening Night Live trailer put the spotlight on Salt, an intelligent Awakened octopus who joins protagonist Jun Aslan’s crew. It also offered a new look at the game’s central idea: when interstellar travel causes vastly different amounts of time to pass for travelers and the people they leave behind, even a rescue mission can carry consequences across generations.
What the Gamescom trailer revealed about Salt
Salt is an Awakened: an intelligent animal with the ability to communicate and participate in organized society. She comes from an ocean world inhabited by an intelligent octopus population and joins Jun as a mercenary and bounty hunter. The game’s official description presents her as highly capable, fiercely independent and unused to relying on anyone else. 2616
The trailer also established Salt as a combat-focused companion rather than a purely narrative party member. She pilots a specialized combat mech and can support Jun with:
- long-range sniper fire;
- rapid evasive maneuvers; and
- ink-like smokescreens that disorient or obscure enemies. 367
That combination gives Salt a clear battlefield identity: she can cover Jun from a distance, disrupt encounters and help the party move through dangerous areas. Her personality appears just as important as her abilities. Promotional material characterizes her as blunt, self-reliant and survival-minded, while her partnership with Jun is based on a shared need to protect the place they call home. 616
Salt’s tragedy is tied to time dilation—but the full story is unknown
The trailer shows Salt connected to a devastated, dried-out ocean environment and frames her history through Exodus’ time-dilation premise. The implication is that relativistic travel separated her from her home and people, leaving her unable to prevent—or return in time to stop—their loss. 178
That is the strongest supported reading of the footage, but it is not yet a complete chronology. The trailer and available reporting do not fully establish exactly when Salt left, how much time passed for different groups, or the precise cause of the destruction. Those details remain part of the game’s unrevealed story rather than confirmed background.
This uncertainty is important because time dilation is not just a science-fiction setting detail in Exodus. The developers describe it as a system that changes the consequences of player decisions: a short expedition for Jun may correspond to years, decades or longer for people elsewhere. 3845 Salt’s story appears to show the personal cost of that idea before the game has even launched.
Who is Emrys?
The trailer also showed Emrys, another companion fighting alongside Jun and Salt. Current coverage identifies Emrys as a member of the Celestial-associated Deva species. The available material confirms Emrys’s presence in the party, but has not yet fully explained the character’s origin, personality, abilities or individual story arc. 348
That makes Salt the more clearly defined of the two companions for now. Her role, combat style and emotional conflict have been described in promotional material, while Emrys remains a comparatively open question.
What is Exodus about?
The game takes place roughly 40,000 years after humanity left a dying Earth for the Centauri Cluster. Human ark ships arrived at different times, producing societies that developed along dramatically different technological and historical paths. Some of the oldest arrivals became the Celestials, a powerful civilization whose technology and ruins are central to the setting. 81825
Players take the role of Jun Aslan, a salvager who becomes a Traveler—an explorer capable of undertaking dangerous journeys between worlds. Jun is the heir of the legendary Traveler Orion Aslan and has a unique ability to interface with Celestial technology. 2431
Jun’s mission involves exploring ancient ruins and recovering Celestial Remnants that could help save his homeworld from the Rot, a Celestial virus driving humanity toward extinction. Along the way, he leads a crew made up of specialists, soldiers, mercenaries, scholars and Awakened animals. The relationships and chemistry within that crew are intended to affect both combat and story decisions. 182430
How the gameplay works
Footage released so far points to a cinematic, real-time third-person RPG with:
- gunplay and melee combat;
- companion abilities and squad coordination;
- dialogue and choice-driven storytelling;
- traversal through hostile planets, ruins and derelict structures; and
- equipment, weapon modes and character abilities that shape encounters. 15182021
Jun is a defined protagonist rather than a completely blank-slate avatar. Players can choose between male and female versions and customize aspects of Jun’s appearance, including options such as hairstyles, facial hair, hair color, eye color, makeup and tattoos, but the developers have described the system as curated customization rather than a full slider-based character creator. 1724
Why Exodus is compared with Mass Effect
The comparison comes from several overlapping features: Exodus is a cinematic, third-person, character-focused science-fiction RPG with a central protagonist, a recruitable crew, alien companions, dialogue choices and action combat. The connection is also reinforced by Archetype Entertainment’s creative leadership. 23234
Archetype was founded by former BioWare leaders including James Ohlen and Chad Robertson, while Drew Karpyshyn, known for writing on projects including Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, is part of the studio’s creative background. Ohlen has acknowledged that Mass Effect was a major influence on Exodus. 43334
The key distinction is the game’s emphasis on time dilation. In a conventional choice-driven RPG, consequences may appear through branching dialogue or alternate missions. In Exodus, the passage of time itself is designed to change what happens between journeys and reshape the lives of people Jun leaves behind. 1238
Still, Exodus is not a literal Mass Effect successor. It is a new science-fiction IP with its own universe, characters and systems, developed by Archetype and published by Wizards of the Coast. 411
Who is making Exodus?
Exodus is the debut game from Archetype Entertainment, an Austin-based studio established in 2019 as a Wizards of the Coast division. The studio was created to develop new intellectual property outside the publisher’s better-known Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering franchises. 441
Wizards of the Coast is publishing the game. The project was first publicly revealed at The Game Awards 2023, where Matthew McConaughey appeared to help introduce it. 54755
What role does Matthew McConaughey play?
Matthew McConaughey does not play Jun Aslan. He portrays C. C. Orlev, a Traveler character who serves as an important mentor figure in the story. McConaughey helped unveil Exodus at The Game Awards 2023, where the project was first introduced to the public. 84952
Jun remains the playable protagonist: the salvager-turned-Traveler whose expedition brings together Salt, Emrys and the wider crew.
What is still unknown?
Despite the growing amount of gameplay footage, several major details have not been fully revealed. The final party roster, the complete combat roles of every companion, the identity and structure of the main antagonists, the precise explanation of Salt’s tragedy and the full range of branching outcomes remain unclear in current public material.
What is established is a focused premise: Exodus combines BioWare-style companion drama and third-person action with a time system that can turn a short journey into a life-changing absence. The April 2027 release date gives players a firm point to look toward, while Salt’s reveal suggests that the game’s most memorable stories may come from what happens to the people waiting at home.
