Qwen Book and the “OS as Harness” Approach to AI Agents

Unveiled at the 2026 Apsara Conference, Qwen Book is Alibaba Cloud’s proposed computer built around an AI agent. Its defining idea, “OS as Harness,” is to make the operating system a working environment where an agent can use models, retain context and coordinate applications, cloud services and hardware over a continuing task.16

How “OS as Harness” is meant to work

Rather than confining the agent to a chatbot window, Alibaba’s description places it within the computer’s broader software and hardware environment. It describes a low-power on-device Agent Engine and a Continuous Context Engine, supported by Qwen model services through cloud–device integration. The intended result is an agent that can use relevant personal context, call tools and resume multi-step work instead of starting from a fresh prompt each time.1

That describes a product direction, not a demonstrated guarantee that every proposed cross-app task already works end to end. Alibaba has described an initial ARM release and x86 compatibility, but the available material does not establish performance, battery life or the extent of autonomous operation in a shipping device.1

What might a task look like?

Imagine asking the computer to plan a trip using saved notes and preferences. An agent could gather the relevant context, consult a connected travel service and prepare an itinerary in an office application. This is an illustrative workflow, not a confirmed Qwen Book demonstration.

There are pieces of a broader ecosystem behind the idea. Qwen Book’s product listing names WPS Office and a context-gathering partner, YoooClaw, among its integrations.32 Separately, Alibaba describes travel, payment and productivity services connected to the Qwen App, including Amap and Alipay.1820 Those Qwen App integrations should not be taken as proof that the entire example is already available on Qwen Book.

Where Omarchy and Qwen Intelligence fit

Alibaba Cloud has committed $3 million over three years to the Omacom Foundation and says it will collaborate on adapting the Omarchy Linux desktop for Qwen Book, alongside support for Omarchy in China.1 This is an OS collaboration; it does not establish that every Qwen Book will ship with Omarchy.

Qwen Intelligence is a different product. It is Alibaba’s agentic platform for smartphone makers to build cross-app phone experiences, with HONOR identified as its first adopter. Qwen Book is the computer-and-OS effort.23

When can people try Qwen Book?

The Qwen Book listing advertises 100 places in its Day One tester program and says applications run through October 31, 2026.32 Caixin reports that public testing is planned for December 2026.6 Both are forward-looking milestones as of September 2026; neither establishes that public trials have begun.
