Two drones entered Moldovan airspace from the direction of Ukraine on October 31, 2026, as Russia attacked Ukraine. That evening, Romania reported two unauthorized drone incursions, scrambled four F-16s and an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter, and issued public alerts across six counties. A flight bound for Iași was diverted. Authorities did not report a drone shot down or recovered that day.

Moldova: two drones, tracked at different times
Moldova’s Air Operations Centre detected the first drone at 16:24, flying from Semenivka in Ukraine’s Odesa region toward Plopi in the Rîbnița district.
2 It disappeared from radar near Tîbirica, in Călărași district, at 16:54. Moldova later said the drone had left its airspace and reopened airspace over the north and centre of the country at 17:14. Losing a radar track, on its own, does not establish that an aircraft crashed.

A second drone was detected at 17:50, approaching from Ukraine’s Vinnytsia region. Moldovan authorities said it flew over parts of Soroca, Dondușeni and Edineț districts, then left Moldovan airspace near Viișoara, in Edineț, at 18:12.

Romania: fighter jets scrambled and six counties alerted
Romanian radar detected an aerial target about 10 kilometres from the border with Moldova. Two F-16s were initially scrambled; reporting on the response said four F-16s and an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter were ultimately deployed to monitor the situation.

Romania said two drones had entered its airspace without authorization. One left the country; the other was last seen between Vaslui and Bacău counties. Alerts were issued in Iași, Neamț, Vaslui, Botoșani, Bacău and Suceava, and were later lifted.

The available reports do not establish the full routes of both drones in Romania or what happened to the one last seen between Vaslui and Bacău. They also do not report that either drone was shot down or found after losing track of it.

A separate crash in Moldova on October 23
The October 31 alerts followed a separate incident on October 23, when a drone crashed in a field in Chiștelnița, Telenești district, about 100 metres from a home. Initial reports said no one was injured.

President Maia Sandu identified the drone as a Russian Geran; reports said it was carrying explosives. Moldova then declared a Russian Embassy employee persona non grata.

51 On October 25, Russia’s Foreign Ministry warned of a “tough response” to the decision.

Moldova’s Defence Ministry had recorded 63 airspace violations in 2026 as of October 16, including 15 in October, according to a report citing the ministry’s figures. The same report put the total at more than 100 since February 2022. Those figures predate the incidents on October 23 and 31, so they are not a tally for the full month.

What the reports do—and don’t—show
Romania’s Ministry of Defence separately said that on October 17, two drones entered Romanian airspace over its territorial waters and were shot down by F-16s. That was a distinct incident; the available reports do not establish that those drones were connected to the October 31 targets.

The information available here also does not verify specific claims about how Moldova’s neutrality limits military assistance from Romania, or about negotiations on a joint Romanian-Moldovan counter-drone programme. Those claims should not be treated as established based on these reports.
