Valheim’s September 9, 2026 version 1.0 release is both a major content update and the game’s formal exit from Steam Early Access. More than five and a half years after its February 2021 debut, Iron Gate is finishing the biome roadmap with the Deep North—a frozen endgame destination at the far northern edge of procedurally generated worlds.

The headline addition: the Deep North
The Deep North is Valheim’s eighth and final biome update. It is built around deep snow, frozen terrain, icy lakes, and severe northern conditions rather than simply revisiting the game’s existing Mountain biome.

The region introduces new threats and places to explore, including Gammeltrolls and underground Elakingar encounters. Players will find two new dungeon types: the Winding Tunnels and the Gates of Mörkhalla.

The biome also brings new weapons, base-building options, and crafting content. Iron Gate had previously confirmed a new workshop addition called the Frost Foundry, while coverage of the final release describes a craftable shovel used to clear heavy snow before building.

At the end of this progression is Hervor Bloodtooth, identified in pre-release coverage as Valheim’s final boss, alongside a new equipment tier.

A full release after a long Early Access run
Valheim entered Steam Early Access in February 2021 and has sold more than 17 million copies, according to the release announcement.

13 Version 1.0 marks the completion of the planned biome sequence, not merely a routine patch: Iron Gate has described Deep North as the final biome update that brings the game to 1.0.

Initial critical reception was strong. As of September 8, 2026, Valheim 1.0 had a 91 Metacritic score based on early critic reviews, though that figure can change as further reviews are added.

Platforms and crossplay
Version 1.0 launches on Windows PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 join the existing platform lineup at launch.

Iron Gate also confirms full crossplay across those platforms, allowing groups to play together regardless of where they own the game.

Price and what existing players receive
The listed price rises to $29.99 with the 1.0 release. Existing owners do not need to buy the game again: version 1.0 is delivered as a free update, while regional pricing may vary.

Should you start a new Valheim world?
Existing characters and worlds remain usable after the update. But Deep North biome generation works properly only in map areas that players have not explored, so Iron Gate recommends starting over for the best possible 1.0 experience.
17
That leaves returning players with a practical choice:
- Keep an established world to retain its builds, characters, and progress, accepting that already explored northern areas may not generate the new content correctly.
- Start a new world to experience the revised progression and Deep North as intended.

What 1.0 does not settle
The full release focuses on the Deep North, not an Ocean overhaul. Iron Gate’s FAQ says 1.0 has no content specifically focused on the Ocean biome, although it includes some new content elsewhere in Valheim.
17
Iron Gate has also not committed publicly to a defined slate of expansions or DLC after 1.0. The launch completes the game’s planned biome journey, but it does not guarantee that development ends immediately.
