Galaxy S22 Gets a Second Life With LineageOS 23

The Galaxy S22 series is not finished—but Samsung’s official Android roadmap is. The S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra have reached Android 16 with One UI 8, using up Samsung’s promised four major Android upgrades. The arrival of official LineageOS 23 nightly builds now gives eligible Exynos models a credible alternative: a cleaner Android experience today and a possible route to Android 17 later.

That opportunity comes with important limits. LineageOS is community-maintained rather than Samsung-supported, and installing it can affect app compatibility, data, and device functionality. For most owners, staying on Samsung’s firmware remains the lower-risk choice. For experienced users who want to keep an otherwise capable phone useful beyond its official software life, LineageOS is a meaningful second life—not a guaranteed upgrade path.

What Samsung’s end of major updates means

The Galaxy S22 family launched with Android 12 and was covered by Samsung’s four-generation Android upgrade commitment. Android 16 and One UI 8 therefore represent the final major Android version for the S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra. The lineup has been excluded from the Android 17 and One UI 9 roadmap.

That does not mean Samsung immediately stops updating the phones. Samsung lists the Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra among devices receiving quarterly security updates, which can include patches for Android vulnerabilities and Samsung-specific security issues. Based on the five-year security-update commitment reported for the series, owners should expect maintenance to continue roughly into early 2027, although delivery timing and the final schedule can vary by market.

In practical terms, Samsung’s stock software remains the simplest option for owners who prioritize official security fixes, Samsung’s proprietary features, and predictable updates over having the newest Android version.

What LineageOS 23 adds

LineageOS 23 is currently based on Android 16, and official nightly builds are available for the Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra. The initial support reported for the series is for Exynos variants, so owners should confirm the exact model and regional variant before downloading anything. Snapdragon compatibility should not be assumed.

LineageOS replaces One UI with a more minimal, near-stock Android environment. That can mean fewer Samsung preinstalled apps, less duplication, and a different interface with fewer One UI-specific features. Official support also means the project provides device-specific build downloads and installation guidance rather than leaving users to rely solely on an unmaintained third-party package.

The immediate benefit is Android 16 outside Samsung’s official software channel. The longer-term possibility is Android 17: reporting indicates that Android 17 could reach the S22 through a future LineageOS release, but that remains a possibility rather than a promise.

The security trade-off

LineageOS can extend a phone’s software life, but it does not recreate Samsung’s vendor support. Future releases, hardware compatibility, camera and modem stability, and continued nightly builds depend on maintainers who must keep adapting the device software. If active maintainers stop working on the device, official support can eventually end.

LineageOS says Android security bulletins are merged into supported LineageOS versions monthly. That is useful, but it should not be treated as identical to Samsung firmware: the ROM and its device support still depend on community maintenance and the availability of the necessary proprietary components.

The word “official” also needs context. It means the device is accepted into the LineageOS project and has project-supported builds and documentation. It does not mean Samsung has extended its warranty, drivers, or hardware support, nor does it guarantee that every future Android release will work perfectly.

Banking apps, Play Integrity, and Netflix

The largest everyday risk is app compatibility. LineageOS deliberately does not try to circumvent Google Play Integrity or the older SafetyNet system. Apps that require a device to pass integrity checks may refuse to install, block features, or stop working.

That can affect some banking and payment apps. Netflix is another example: LineageOS notes that developers can use Play Integrity to restrict app availability or functionality, and identifies Netflix among apps affected by these checks.

Community workarounds may exist, but they are unofficial and can stop working after an app or Google Play update. They should not be treated as a dependable solution for a phone that must reliably handle banking, payments, or other security-sensitive tasks. The safest approach is to check the apps you use before changing the operating system—and, if necessary, keep a stock device available.

Installation is not a casual software update

Installing LineageOS requires an unlocked bootloader and a device-specific flashing process. The LineageOS wiki warns that an official bootloader-unlocking method is not available for the relevant Galaxy device, while unofficial methods are unsupported and used at the owner’s risk.

The process also requires preparation. Flashing can erase local data, so a complete backup is essential. LineageOS’s installation guidance and related documentation emphasize following the instructions for the exact model rather than treating the S22 family as one interchangeable device.

Owners should verify all of the following before proceeding:

• The exact model number and regional variant
• Whether the device is an eligible Exynos model
• Whether an official bootloader-unlock route is available
• Whether the required recovery, ROM, and optional Google Apps packages match the device
• Whether essential banking, payment, work, and streaming apps will remain usable
• Whether a complete backup exists outside the phone

The official LineageOS documentation should be the starting point. A generic guide or a build intended for another S22 variant can turn a promising software project into a difficult recovery exercise.

Should Galaxy S22 owners install LineageOS 23?

Stay with Samsung’s software if you want:

• The lowest-risk installation and update experience
• Samsung-specific features and services
• The best chance of compatibility with banking, payment, and DRM-protected apps
• Security maintenance through the remaining official support period

Consider LineageOS if you:

• Own an eligible Exynos model
• Are comfortable unlocking a bootloader and reinstalling the phone
• Prefer a leaner Android interface with fewer Samsung additions
• Accept that some apps may fail or lose functionality
• Want a possible Android 17 route after Samsung’s Android 16 endpoint
• Understand that long-term support depends on volunteer maintainers

The decision is less about whether LineageOS can make the Galaxy S22 feel newer and more about which compromises fit the owner. Samsung’s firmware offers certainty and compatibility for the remainder of its support window. LineageOS offers control, a cleaner experience, and the possibility of keeping the hardware relevant for longer—but it transfers more responsibility and risk to the user.

For an experienced Exynos S22 owner, official LineageOS 23 support is genuinely significant. It turns Samsung’s final Android version into a starting point for continued experimentation rather than an absolute software dead end. But Android 17, uninterrupted nightlies, and full app compatibility are all possibilities—not guarantees.
