The iPhone Duo’s first preorder morning showed that buyers moved quickly for Apple’s $1,999 foldable. U.S. delivery estimates reached January 25, 2027, within about 30 minutes of preorders opening on October 16. But a fast move to backorders shows that early orders exceeded available near-term supply—not how many phones Apple will ultimately sell.

What the preorder rush tells us
Apple described preorder demand as “nothing short of extraordinary” and said it was working to get the device to customers as quickly as possible.
17 The company has not disclosed how many Duo units were available at launch or how many were ordered, so delivery estimates cannot be used as a sales total.

The backlog is still a meaningful signal: at least some buyers were ready to order a foldable iPhone at a starting price of $1,999. But without knowing launch inventory, it is impossible to separate how much the long wait reflects unusually strong demand from how much reflects a limited initial supply.
Pickup availability also appeared tight. CNBC reported that launch-day pickup inventory sold out quickly, while Apple’s store directed shoppers to check again on October 24 for pickup availability. That check-back message was not a guarantee of stock.

36 A separate report, citing employee guidance, said some staff were told walk-in stock was unlikely; the report also noted that the advice’s scope was unclear.

Supply constraints and forecasts
A supply-chain report said Apple had asked suppliers for 30% more Duo components, but noted Apple had not confirmed the production figures. That report points to possible supply pressure; it does not establish a specific manufacturing problem or reveal how many phones Apple can ship.

Analyst estimates are also forecasts, not company guidance. Deepwater Asset Management’s Gene Munster said the longer delivery estimates increased his confidence in a 20-million-unit iPhone Duo estimate for fiscal 2027. That view offers one interpretation of the preorder rush, not a count of orders already placed.

What it could mean for Apple’s growth
The Duo gives Apple a new, higher-priced product tier. If it attracts buyers who would not otherwise purchase an iPhone—or persuades existing customers to spend more—it could support iPhone revenue. If buyers simply choose it instead of another iPhone model, the net lift could be smaller. The early preorder data does not yet distinguish those outcomes.
Apple introduced the Duo as its first foldable iPhone. It has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display, with a book-style design that opens to a wider screen.

15 Whether that format becomes a lasting growth driver depends on more than a dramatic launch: fulfillment and demand after the initial supply crunch matter too.
What to watch next
The clearest evidence will come from actual shipments, how delivery estimates change as supply becomes available, and whether buyers keep ordering after the launch window. Until then, the sellout is best read as an encouraging test of interest in a premium foldable—not proof of the Duo’s eventual sales scale or its contribution to Apple’s growth.
