Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, opened for preorder on October 16 and went on sale October 23, starting at $1,999 for 256GB in the United States.

24 Early reports of inner-screen cracks near the hinge and results from a destructive durability test have raised concerns. But the reports and tests available so far cannot show how frequently the phone will fail in normal use.
What the early crack reports say
MacRumors reported owner posts and photos showing display faults along the hinge, often with a line of bright pixels across part of the screen. One Australian owner said the display cracked after fewer than 20 openings.
2 These reports are reasons to pay attention, but they are individual accounts—not a verified count of failures or a failure rate for all iPhone Duo units.
What the durability test found
In JerryRigEverything’s test, the inner display showed scratches at Mohs level 2, while the outer display began showing scratches at level 7. Dust interfered with the hinge, and the phone stopped folding after the test’s bending sequence.
17 Another report describes bending damage to the inner display.

Those results show how the tested device responded to deliberate stress. They do not establish the odds of a screen cracking or a hinge failing during ordinary use. Nor does an IP68 rating, which Apple lists for the phone, answer every question about the folding mechanism under these specific test conditions.

A fold test offers a different, limited signal
CNET reported that its test unit had passed 20,000 folds by October 24. The machine was folding it at about 900 cycles an hour—roughly one fold every four seconds.
20 That is a useful early data point for that unit, but it is not a long-term assessment of a large number of phones.
The early review picture is not uniformly negative: CNET gave the Duo an Editors’ Choice award and praised its design, display, and software.
18 A positive review and a successful folding-machine run can coexist with owner reports of defects; neither determines how widespread those problems are.
What buyers can reasonably conclude
The evidence supports caution, not a verdict that the iPhone Duo is broadly unreliable. Some owners have reported hinge-area display damage, and a stress test exposed vulnerabilities under its test conditions. A separate folding test had passed 20,000 cycles on one test unit.

The key missing piece is a reliable picture of failure rates in everyday use over time. Until there is broader evidence, early reports should be treated as signals worth monitoring—not proof that most devices will fail, or proof that the phone’s long-term durability is settled.
