A murder investigation turns supernatural
Miller previously stopped the reign of satanic serial killer Father Sunday. Thirteen years later, a new killer writes her name in an altar boy’s blood at a church, drawing her back into a case that appears to reach beyond ordinary homicide. 1
The trailer’s central tension is whether the violence is the work of another human killer or something demonic. Reporting on the footage describes gruesome church murders that lead Miller to reconsider earlier killers’ claims of possession. 17
The returning case and the cast
John Leguizamo plays Father Sunday, the serial killer tied to Miller’s earlier case. The reported cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane and Sasha Calle. 1

Flanagan wrote and directed the film. At New York Comic Con, he described it as unlike other entries in the series, pointing to a new direction for the franchise rather than presenting the trailer as a retelling of the original film. 17

What the trailer and poster do—and don’t—confirm
The trailer establishes the broad setup: a detective, a case that resurfaces after 13 years, and a crime investigation that opens the door to supernatural explanations. It does not, by itself, settle what is behind the new murders or how the story will resolve. 1

Coverage from the event also reported the release of a new poster, but the available reporting does not provide enough detail to describe its imagery reliably. 19
Flanagan has said he hoped to make “the scariest thing” he had worked on. That is his ambition for the film, not an independent assessment of how frightening it will be. 19
