During Sharma's visit, unionized Bethesda workers staged a protest outside the studio. They erected a giant inflatable rat—the classic union symbol known as "Scabby"—on the HQ lawn to draw attention to Xbox's sweeping layoffs. The Bethesda Game Studios Union posted on Bluesky: "Today at HQ, we had a giant rat to watch executives who oversaw devastating layoffs."
The protest was in response to the 3,200 employees cut across the Xbox division, including approximately 440 at Bethesda and ZeniMax. Sharma's social media post did not mention the protest, though it was widely covered by outlets including GamesRadar, Kotaku, and Aftermath.
On development progress, Bethesda and its staff told very different stories.
Bethesda's official line (as of July 23, 2026): "The development roadmap is unaffected" by the layoffs, and "the next chapter is on the way." The studio says the game is playable internally and the majority of the studio is working on it.
Staff and union warnings: Multiple Bethesda employees told IGN the cuts will have a "substantial and cascading effect" on TES VI, with over 50 staff moved off the team, including "key, high-performing people." The union warned the project "could be affected" and organized a multi-city "Save Our Devs" rally on July 15.
No official release date exists. Industry insiders, including Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, estimate the game is still 2–3 years away, meaning a 2028 or later launch window. Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty told Variety in June 2026 that the studio will not publicly show The Elder Scrolls 6 until the release date is within reach: "When you show the game, you're also giving them a promise of, hey, it's coming soon."
The game missed the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2026 and has not been officially shown since its 2018 teaser trailer.
Sharma's August 2026 visit was a moment of striking contrasts. The first meaningful subtitle clue in eight years suggested real progress—but the union protest and staff warnings painted a far more uncertain picture. For now, TES6 remains playable, promising, and possibly years away. The giant rat, it seems, may have the final word.
