Volkswagen to Roll Out China-Market Driver Assistance on Seven New EVs

Volkswagen Group China is preparing a broad driver-assistance rollout rather than a single-model debut. Its full-scenario advanced driver-assistance system is scheduled to begin appearing in the third quarter of 2026 on seven new electrified models across the group’s three Chinese joint ventures.

The announcement also sets out a longer-term path toward higher automation: Volkswagen is targeting deliveries of vehicles with Level 3 driving capabilities in China from the second half of 2027. That is a development and delivery target, not a claim that the Q3 2026 rollout will already provide Level 3 automation.

CARIZON is developing the system

The system comes from CARIZON, the China intelligent-driving joint venture formed by Volkswagen’s CARIAD software unit and Horizon Robotics. Its role is to create a unified China-market driving solution that can be used across Volkswagen Group brands and joint ventures, instead of relying on separate technology stacks for individual vehicle programs.

The initial system is described in company and industry reporting as an advanced-assistance solution around the L2/L2++ range. It is intended to support full-scenario driving assistance, including broader urban and navigation use cases, while the higher-level L3 roadmap remains a future phase.

What “white-box” licensing changes

Under the expanded partnership, CARIZON will receive white-box access to Horizon Robotics’ AI foundation model capabilities. In practical terms, the arrangement is meant to give CARIZON more than access to a finished, closed driving system: it can independently develop, adapt, train, iterate and integrate the model into Volkswagen’s own China-focused driving-AI solution.

That approach gives Volkswagen greater control over how the technology is tailored to Chinese road conditions and customer requirements. It also lets CARIZON combine the licensed AI capabilities with its own technology stack, including the in-development C7H system-on-chip and GAIA world-model data platform, according to the partnership announcement.

Why the rollout matters

The Q3 2026 deployment provides a production base for Volkswagen’s localized intelligent-driving strategy. Rather than treating driver assistance as an isolated feature on a small number of vehicles, the group is positioning CARIZON’s system for broader use across three joint ventures and seven electrified models.

The Horizon agreement is designed to accelerate development beyond the initial assistance system toward Volkswagen’s in-house L3 and L4 ambitions in China. Reporting on the plan also links the longer-term technology path to possible Level 4 passenger-vehicle and robotaxi applications, although the currently stated near-term delivery milestone is Level 3 in the second half of 2027.

For buyers, the key distinction is timing: the first wave in 2026 is a rollout of CARIZON’s full-scenario driver assistance, while Volkswagen’s first China deliveries with Level 3 capability are planned for a later stage and remain subject to the company’s development and production schedule.
