Uber and OpenAI announced on October 22, 2026, that ChatGPT Work would expand from a 1,000-person pilot to more than 30,000 employees across Uber’s global workforce. The AI agent is available inside ChatGPT Enterprise and is intended to help teams handle work that can span multiple steps.

What ChatGPT Work does at Uber
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work in July as an enterprise-focused agent that can carry out multistep tasks and return finished work. In Uber’s rollout, it connects with Gmail, Google Drive and Slack.

Uber’s initial pilot included employees in finance, operations and product. About 80% of early users were not engineers, according to Uber engineering vice president Sumanth Sukumar. Reported pilot tasks included analyzing operational data to find trends and prepare recommendations, adapting training materials for different markets and languages, and making interactive dashboards.

Those examples suggest the rollout is aimed at work across business teams, not only software development. Uber says teams will have room to experiment with how the tool fits into their workflows; the company plans to track usage and whether those workflows improve efficiency.

GPT-6.1 Sol is the default model
ChatGPT Work at Uber uses GPT-6.1 Sol by default, according to reporting on the rollout.
7 OpenAI describes the model as strong at agentic coding, computer use and professional work, and says it offers near-Astra intelligence at one-fifth of Astra’s standard input and output token prices.

That is OpenAI’s published model comparison, not a disclosure of Uber’s negotiated rate or total rollout cost. The available reporting does not establish how much Uber is paying for ChatGPT Work.

Why the rollout’s results still matter
The expansion comes amid broader scrutiny of Uber’s AI spending. Fortune reported that Uber had gone through its 2026 AI-tools budget within months after encouraging heavy tool use, including use of Anthropic’s Claude Code, with employee usage leaderboards.
20 That earlier episode involved AI coding tools; it does not, by itself, show what ChatGPT Work will cost or how it will perform across the company.
The rollout makes the agent available at a much larger scale, but access is not the same as demonstrated impact. Uber’s plan to monitor how employees use it and whether workflows become more efficient will be important evidence of whether the pilot’s examples translate into measurable results.
