The Coalition’s Gamescom Opening Night Live story trailer presents Gears of War: E-Day as the moment the world of Gears changes forever. Rather than beginning with a fully formed war, it follows young Marcus Fenix, Dominic “Dom” Santiago, and their fellow soldiers as a seemingly localized disaster becomes the first devastating assault by the Locust Horde.

The trailer’s central idea is simple: Emergence Day is terrifying partly because nobody understands what is happening. Marcus and Dom are not yet the hardened veterans seen in the original Gears of War. They are young soldiers returning to civilian life when the ground opens beneath Sera and the Locust begin their attack.

A personal view of the first Locust invasion
E-Day is set 14 years before the 2006 Gears of War. Marcus and Dom have recently returned from the Pendulum Wars and are attending an armistice memorial when the invasion begins. The story is set in the city of Kalona, where the pair and their Bravo Squad comrades are caught in the unfolding crisis.

The trailer depicts the attack as a rapid breakdown of normal life. What first appears to be a local emergency expands into a fight for survival as the squad discovers that the Locust threat is far larger—and more organized—than anyone expected. Later footage shows Bravo Squad confronting the enemy underground and facing an overwhelming Locust force.

That setup gives the prequel two connected origin stories: the beginning of the Locust War and the formation of the brotherhood between Marcus and Dom.
8 The trailer’s unusually raw, profanity-heavy dialogue reinforces the sense that the characters are reacting in real time rather than delivering polished battlefield speeches. The tone is darker, more desperate, and deliberately closer to the brutal atmosphere associated with the earliest games.

Bravo Squad and the campaign structure
The campaign centers on Marcus and Dom, but Bravo Squad also includes Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes. In single-player, Marcus is the playable lead. In co-op, all four Bravo Squad characters are playable in a four-player lobby, allowing the campaign to support the group dynamic at the heart of the story.

That structure makes the game’s premise more than a retelling of a familiar historical event. Players see the Locust emergence through soldiers who are still trying to understand the scale of the threat—and through a Marcus and Dom who have not yet become the iconic COG veterans of the original game.
Combat stays recognizably Gears, but moves more freely
The Coalition is rebuilding E-Day in Unreal Engine 5, with the technology supporting new character models, environments, animation, sound, and visual detail.

35 The game retains the series’ cover-based foundation while redesigning movement from the ground up.
The updated movement set includes sliding, vaulting, jumping, and more fluid transitions between cover positions. The goal is not to discard the deliberate weight of Gears, but to make traversal and combat feel less rigid while preserving the series’ close-quarters identity.

Weapons also receive mechanical changes. The Gnasher, for example, can load shells individually, and players can interrupt a reload to fire sooner at the cost of carrying a smaller loaded magazine. That creates a more immediate risk-reward decision during a firefight: finish reloading for maximum capacity or stop early to get a shot off when timing matters.

Horde Siege and Versus expand the multiplayer offering
Beyond the campaign, E-Day includes the new PvE mode Horde Siege and a revised Versus multiplayer experience. Horde Siege is designed around squad coordination, classes, shared objectives, and boss encounters. Official multiplayer details describe a 12-player PvE format with three squads, while the campaign itself supports up to four players.

Versus brings back competitive player-versus-player combat with new maps and modes, alongside the updated movement system. The result is a multiplayer package intended to preserve the familiar Gears rhythm while giving players more ways to move, coordinate, and attack.

The trailer fulfilled an earlier promise
The Gamescom reveal followed a teaser from the official Gears of War account promising: “We’ve shown you the fight. Next, we’ll show you what’s at stake.” The post announced the world premiere of the campaign story trailer during Gamescom Opening Night Live.

The resulting footage makes the stakes clear: E-Day is not simply another battle in the Locust War. It is the story of the day that war arrived without warning, told through the young soldiers who experienced humanity’s first encounter with the enemy from inside the chaos.
