The service is available to eligible institutional clients and covers BTC/USD and ETH/USD trades.

What Standard Chartered launched
The offering lets qualifying institutions buy and sell Bitcoin and Ether for U.S. dollars on a spot basis through Standard Chartered’s electronic trading channels. Because the trades are deliverable, clients receive the underlying digital assets rather than only taking price exposure through a derivative.

The bank positioned the launch as the first time it had extended this institutional spot-trading capability outside the UK.

How execution and settlement work
Eligible clients access the product through Standard Chartered’s electronic trading infrastructure, integrated with the bank’s existing platforms. That means institutions can use established electronic foreign-exchange workflows rather than a separate retail-oriented crypto venue.

After a deliverable trade, settlement can take place with Standard Chartered or through a third-party custodian selected by the client. This gives institutions a choice over where the purchased Bitcoin or Ether is held.

How the service expands the UAE offering
The UAE launch adds trading execution to Standard Chartered’s local digital-asset proposition. The bank launched a UAE digital-asset custody service in September 2024, enabling institutional clients to safekeep digital assets; the new service adds the ability to execute and settle spot trades.

The service is offered through Standard Chartered DIFC, which operates within the Dubai International Financial Centre and is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority.

Why the announcement matters
Standard Chartered said it became the first global systemically important bank, or G-SIB, to offer institutional Bitcoin and Ether spot trading in the UAE. Reuters also reported that the launch made it the first G-SIB to offer the service in the Gulf country.

The distinction is about the provider and the institutional delivery model: a major internationally systemically important bank is offering deliverable spot execution through its own electronic channels, alongside custody and settlement options.
The UK precedent
The UAE rollout followed Standard Chartered’s July 2025 launch of an institutional digital-assets trading service through its UK branch. That earlier service provided deliverable Bitcoin and Ether spot trading via the bank’s eFX desk.

Together, the UK and UAE launches show Standard Chartered extending a bank-led model for institutional digital-asset trading: spot execution, delivery of the underlying assets and custody infrastructure are designed to sit within familiar institutional workflows.
