Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Brings 12 Sports and Free-Roam Wuhu Island to Switch 2

Nintendo’s September 9 Direct gave a closer look at Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, a Switch 2-exclusive follow-up built around motion-controlled competition and a newly explorable Wuhu Island. That Switch 2 exclusivity is central to the game’s pitch: Nintendo frames the experience around Joy-Con 2 control options rather than as an update for the original Switch.

Wuhu Island is a hub, not just a backdrop

The biggest change is the return of Wuhu Island as an explorable resort. Nintendo says players can explore the island, seek out photo spots, and take part in Leisure Sports such as Prop Plane and Skateboarding. 33

This makes the island more than a selection screen for individual events. The Direct footage also highlighted sightseeing and photo-oriented activities around the resort, including searching for objects while flying or skateboarding. 10

Some reports describe jet skiing as an additional activity and count 13 activities when it and Jump Rope are included. Nintendo’s own product pages, however, consistently market 12 sports, with Power Cruising included in that count. The safest reading is that 12 is the official number of main sports, while the exact classification of some water and warm-up activities differs between coverage. 333839

Controls and customization

The sports use Joy-Con 2 motion controls, with the controllers standing in for equipment such as bows, paddles and handlebars. 21 Skateboarding also supports Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for movement around the island. 33

Ways to play

Why it looks closer to Wii Sports Resort

The 2022 Nintendo Switch Sports concentrated on a smaller set of sports venues. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort appears designed as a broader resort experience: 12 main sports, leisure activities, free exploration, photo hunting and the return of Wuhu Island all create a stronger connective setting.

That does not by itself prove how much long-term depth the finished game will have. But based on Nintendo’s announced design, it is a much more direct spiritual successor to Wii Sports Resort than the 2022 entry: the destination itself is once again part of the game, not merely the place where matches happen. 33
