This is satellite IoT rather than a conventional consumer broadband service. The focus is on connecting devices and collecting or exchanging relatively small amounts of data in places where terrestrial networks may be unavailable or unreliable. Reported capabilities include all-weather data collection and remote interaction.

The common requirement across these sectors is dependable connectivity for sensors and machines operating across large, remote or mobile areas. Satellite links can complement terrestrial networks in those settings, although the trial itself will be important for testing how the services perform in real deployments.
The regulatory significance goes beyond Geespace’s constellation. A permit to trial satellite IoT services gives a private operator a route from spacecraft development into communications operations and potential commercial use. Reports describe the move as part of China’s effort to open satellite communications to private capital and support the growth of commercial space.
That does not amount to a fully open satellite-communications market. Geespace has received authorization for a commercial trial, not an unrestricted nationwide or permanent operating license. The two-year period gives regulators and operators a defined setting in which to evaluate services, applications and market demand.
Still, the approval may give private companies greater incentive to invest in constellations, terminals and industry partnerships. It also creates a second operator against which the emerging satellite-IoT ecosystem can be compared.
MIIT’s first reported satellite-IoT commercial-test license went to Beijing Guodian High-Tech Technology, also known as Guodian Gaoke, in May 2026. That authorization also covered a two-year trial, based on the company’s Tianqi constellation.
Geespace’s approval is therefore the second reported satellite-IoT commercial-test license overall. The distinction between the two entrants is notable: Guodian Gaoke’s initiative was associated with state-owned China Mobile, while Geespace is backed by Geely.
The sequence suggests that the pilot framework is moving beyond its initial state-linked participant to include a Geely-backed private commercial-space company. It is too early to conclude how quickly this will lead to broader licensing or strong market competition, but the second approval provides evidence that the trial regime is expanding.
The key question is whether Geespace can turn constellation infrastructure into dependable services for industries that operate beyond reliable terrestrial coverage. Its trial will need to demonstrate useful connectivity for low-power devices, workable industry integrations and applications that justify the cost of satellite-enabled monitoring.
For China’s commercial-space sector, the outcome could help clarify whether satellite IoT becomes a scalable complement to terrestrial mobile networks. For now, the MIIT approval is best understood as a regulatory milestone: it gives another private-sector operator permission to test the commercial layer of satellite communications and provides a concrete next step for China’s expanding commercial-space industry.
