BYD used IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover to introduce the ETT 44, a battery-electric 4×2 tractor unit positioned as the flagship of its European commercial-vehicle range. It is designed for gross combination weights of up to 44 tonnes and targets long-haul freight rather than only city or regional work.

The headline specification is ambitious: a 651 kWh LFP Blade Battery, an 851 V electrical architecture, 743 PS continuous output, up to 1,000 PS (750 kW) peak output, and megawatt-class charging. But the ETT 44’s commercial case will ultimately rest on whether fleets can access suitable charging, maintenance and financing across real European routes.

These figures describe the long-range version presented by BYD. The approximately 600 km range is a manufacturer claim; reporting on the accompanying technical material noted that the range field was still marked “TBC,” so it should not be treated as a published real-world or standardized-cycle result.

Why the charging claim matters
The ETT 44 supports conventional CCS2 DC charging at up to 420 kW, for a stated 20–80% session of roughly an hour. BYD’s bigger proposition is its FLASH Charging or Megawatt Charging System capability: more than 1.5 MW and a claimed 20-minute 20–80% charge.

For long-haul operations, that difference is material. A one-hour charge can work on planned stops and depot-based operations; a 20-minute stop could fit much more naturally into tightly scheduled freight work. Yet the faster figure applies only where an appropriate Megawatt Charging System charger and sufficient grid capacity are available. The truck is ready for that infrastructure; routes may not be.
Safety: five stars and CitySafe recognition
The ETT 44 received a five-star rating and the CitySafe award in Euro NCAP’s commercial-vehicle assessment. Euro NCAP said the new entrant compared well with five-star Mercedes-Benz and Scania long-haul diesel models.

Its published assessment lists 89% for Safe Driving and reports 73% for Crash Avoidance. Euro NCAP highlighted direct vision, including the low cab position, lower-door viewing window and electronic mirrors, as strengths.

That independent result gives BYD a useful credibility marker in a market where fleet operators place heavy weight on safety performance and established truck brands.
A wider electric-truck portfolio, not a one-model launch
The ETT 44 was the centrepiece of a broader European commercial-vehicle presentation spanning vehicles from 3.5 to 44 tonnes. BYD positioned the range across urban distribution, municipal, regional and long-haul applications.

The company is also offering a Total Cost of Mobility approach that combines the truck with energy consumption, electricity pricing, charging infrastructure, operations and financing.

The European challenge: incumbents, price and service
BYD enters a market served by established manufacturers including Mercedes-Benz, Volvo Trucks, Scania and MAN. Those companies have mature dealer, repair and parts networks, an important advantage for fleets that depend on vehicle uptime.

Price could be a pressure point. Reuters reported in March that Chinese entrants were aiming to price electric trucks up to 30% below a European average of about €320,000, though BYD had not announced ETT 44 pricing in the material available.

BYD’s long battery warranty and vertically integrated vehicle-and-charging offer could strengthen its fleet proposition. Still, the deciding evidence will come from deployed trucks: uptime, energy use under load, charging reliability, repair turnaround and residual values.
Regulation and tariffs could shape the rollout
Policy can improve the economics of zero-emission freight, while trade policy can alter the economics of imported vehicles. Reuters reported that new Chinese truck entrants were seeking measures such as lower highway tolls and zero-emission freight mandates to support demand.

At the same time, BYD has signalled plans for European truck production in part to pre-empt possible tariff exposure.
18 Local production could change the cost and political equation, but it does not remove the operational need for chargers, service capacity and fleet confidence.
Bottom line
The ETT 44 is BYD’s serious opening move in European long-haul electric freight: a 44-tonne electric tractor with a large LFP battery, 1,000 PS peak output, a 10-year/1.2-million-kilometre battery warranty and a claimed 20-minute megawatt charging stop.
