Blizzard used BlizzCon 2026 to announce a new game simply called StarCraft. It is an open-world shooter targeting 2030, marking a sharp departure from the real-time strategy format that made the franchise famous. Former Far Cry lead Dan Hay is heading the project.

A new viewpoint on StarCraft’s war
Hay described the game as an open-world shooter in which “every step is earned,” framing the premise as a move from observing war above the battlefield to facing it directly on the ground. He said the team’s goal is to return to—and “re-ignite”—the StarCraft universe.

That makes this a revival of the setting rather than an announced RTS sequel. Blizzard has not announced a traditional strategy follow-up alongside it.

What the “Dominion” trailer showed
The debut was a roughly three-minute cinematic titled “Dominion,” not gameplay footage. It follows Terran Marine recruit Holt through Dominion training and deployment before he is overwhelmed by a Zerg swarm. The trailer then shows his armor being recovered and repaired for another soldier, a grim image of the Dominion treating individual recruits as replaceable parts of its war machine.

The cinematic establishes a militaristic, bleak tone and puts Terran soldiers and the Zerg conflict at the center of the reveal. It does not, however, confirm the player character, the game’s perspective, combat systems, world structure beyond Blizzard’s “open-world shooter” description, or multiplayer plans.

The 2030 timing should be read as a target rather than a locked launch day: no month or day was announced.

Blizzard’s third major attempt at a StarCraft shooter
The project carries notable history. StarCraft: Ghost, a console-focused tactical action game centered on a Dominion Ghost operative, was announced in 2002 and put on indefinite hold in 2006 before ultimately being canceled. A later shooter project, codenamed Ares, was canceled in 2019 as Blizzard redirected resources to Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2.

That history makes the new game more than a routine genre experiment: it is Blizzard’s latest attempt to make a shooter work in the StarCraft universe after two high-profile failures to ship one.
The real challenge: making it feel like StarCraft
The announcement confirms the genre and tone, but not yet the game’s identity. StarCraft’s distinctiveness has traditionally come from asymmetrical factions, battlefield decision-making, and the tension among Terrans, Zerg, and Protoss. A shooter will need to translate enough of that character into moment-to-moment play to avoid feeling like a generic power-armored sci-fi war game.
Pre-reveal reporting drew comparisons to Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, but those reports were not confirmation of Blizzard’s final design. With no gameplay shown, it is too early to judge whether the new StarCraft will meaningfully differentiate itself from other large-scale military sci-fi shooters.

For now, Blizzard has made one thing clear: StarCraft is returning, but its next battle will be fought from inside the armor rather than from a command screen.
