Apple released iOS 27.2 on October 26, bringing Apple Pencil support to its foldable iPhone Duo just days after the phone reached customers. The update also adds Edge Light, which uses the Duo’s inner display to illuminate a user’s face during video calls, and includes changes to Siri and other apps.

Apple Pencil works on both Duo displays
The iPhone Duo supports the $79 Apple Pencil (USB-C)—and no other Apple Pencil model is listed as compatible. The stylus works with both the 5.4-inch outer display and the 7.6-inch inner display.

On either screen, users can annotate PDFs and images, sketch, and save handwritten notes. Those capabilities fulfill Apple’s earlier promise that the Duo would support the Pencil for notes, sketches, and document markup “later this year.”

There are limitations. Apple says hover is not supported, and reporting says the Duo must be paired with the USB-C Pencil using a cable. Apple Pencil Pro and other Pencil models are not compatible.

What durability reports do—and don’t—show
A durability test found that the Duo’s inner display scratched at level two and developed deeper grooves from fingernail pressure. The marks were still visible with the display turned off.

That test raises a practical concern for a foldable screen, but it does not show that normal Apple Pencil use damages the display. Separately, Apple acknowledged an inner-display issue affecting a small number of Duo units and advised affected customers to contact AppleCare about replacement; the cause was not clear in the available reporting.

The nano-texture cover layer over the inner display can be replaced. Reported U.S. prices are $49 without AppleCare+ and $19 with it; these prices are for the cover layer, not a full display replacement.

Edge Light adds lighting for video calls
Edge Light brightens the user’s face by lighting the outer edge of the Duo’s inner display during video calls. It is one of the Duo-specific additions in iOS 27.2. The available sources describe its video-call purpose but do not establish support for particular third-party apps or other device modes.

Other changes in iOS 27.2
The update expands Siri AI language support to French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Siri can also recall past conversations, such as a restaurant it recommended earlier.

Other reported additions include Suggestions in Messages, SynthID support in Photos and Image Playground to help identify images generated or modified with generative tools, and Dual Capture for Group FaceTime calls. Apple also released version 27.2 updates for iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS.
