Apple Releases macOS 27 Golden Gate and watchOS 27 With Siri AI

Apple’s September platform rollout delivered macOS 27 Golden Gate, iOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27 to compatible devices. The updates became publicly available on September 14, with Apple’s September 15 announcement highlighting the rollout of Siri AI, a new Apple Intelligence-powered version of Siri. 36

The release has two especially consequential limits: macOS 27 is the first major macOS release restricted to Apple-silicon Macs, while watchOS 27 supports only newer Apple Watch hardware. Siri AI is also launching gradually, first as an English beta and with notable regional restrictions. 53545

macOS 27 Golden Gate ends major updates for Intel Macs

macOS 27 Golden Gate supports Macs with an M1 chip or later; Intel-based Macs cannot install the release. That makes macOS Tahoe the final major macOS version for Intel Macs. 35

This does not necessarily mean an immediate end to all Intel Mac maintenance. Reporting indicates Apple is expected to continue security updates for supported older versions, including Tahoe, but Intel Macs will not receive Golden Gate’s new features. Apple has not provided a fixed timetable for those future security updates. 22

For Apple-silicon Mac owners, Golden Gate remains capable of running Intel apps through Apple’s Rosetta translation technology. 5

Siri AI moves into Spotlight on the Mac

The centerpiece of macOS 27 is Siri AI, a more conversational assistant integrated directly into Spotlight. Pressing Command-Space opens the new Search or Ask experience, where users can either find files and system content or ask Siri AI a question. 1213

Apple says Siri AI can use personal context to find relevant information across content such as Messages, Mail, Photos, and more, subject to the user’s settings and permissions. It can also support open-ended, follow-up conversations rather than treating each request as an isolated command. 613

Other macOS 27 refinements include:

• A Liquid Glass appearance control that lets users choose a more transparent or more opaque look for better readability. 1213
• Improved contrast, refraction, window shapes, toolbars, sidebars, icons, and window-shadow behavior. 1112
• Broader Spotlight improvements, including scoped search for items such as applications, files, actions, and clipboard content. 19

Some reporting has described app launches as up to 30% faster, but that figure should be read as a reported performance claim, not a result that every Mac or workload will reproduce. 23

EU availability: Mac is the exception at launch

Siri AI is launching in beta in English. Apple said further language support—including French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish—is planned for October. 646

Availability is not uniform across Apple’s product line. At launch, Siri AI is available on eligible Macs in the European Union, but it is not initially available on iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch in the EU. Apple attributes those restrictions to ongoing work around regional requirements. 145

That makes the Mac the first Apple platform on which EU users can access Siri AI during the initial rollout. 1

watchOS 27: compatibility and new ways to use Apple Watch

watchOS 27 is a free update for these models:

• Apple Watch Series 9 and later
• Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later
• Apple Watch SE 3

It also requires an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), running iOS 27. 3539

The update brings Siri AI to eligible watches, along with a dedicated Siri app for ongoing conversations and a new Siri Modular watch face. 3738

Apple also adds a one-handed Smart Stack interaction: tap the index finger and thumb together to select the currently highlighted widget. The gesture is intended to make Smart Stack navigation easier when the other hand is occupied. 39

Fitness features are expanding as well. Workout Buddy can provide workout insights and motivation without an iPhone nearby when the watch has an appropriate connection. 3645

Siri AI on Apple Watch still depends on a capable iPhone

Watch compatibility alone does not guarantee access to Siri AI. Apple’s support documentation says the feature requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled paired iPhone, including an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 model or later, plus a supported Siri and device language. 45

Siri AI on watchOS 27 is initially an English beta. The feature is also unavailable at launch for EU users on iOS and watchOS. 4546

For Mac owners, the decision is straightforward: an Intel Mac can remain useful and may continue receiving security updates on supported older software, but it cannot move to macOS 27 Golden Gate. Apple-silicon Macs gain the new Siri AI experience, Spotlight integration, and Liquid Glass controls. 51322

For Apple Watch users, Series 9, Ultra 2, and SE 3 are now the entry point for watchOS 27. However, Siri AI requires more than a compatible watch—it also requires a qualifying Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone and a supported region and language. 3545

The broader theme of Apple’s September 2026 release is clear: Siri AI is becoming a system-level feature across Apple platforms, but its usefulness depends heavily on device generation, paired hardware, language, and location. 645
