Lisa Su’s description of AMD as a “data center first” company is best read as a statement about where the company’s growth and strategic focus lie: server processors and AI chips. It came just after data center sales reached nearly two-thirds of AMD’s record quarterly revenue. The remarks do not, by themselves, announce an exit from gaming or other consumer products.

What “data center first” means in the numbers
AMD reported $13.4 billion in third-quarter 2026 revenue, up 45% year over year. Its Data Center segment brought in a record $8.5 billion, up 97%, and accounted for 64% of total revenue. AMD attributed the segment’s performance to demand for EPYC processors and the launch of Instinct MI450 Series GPUs.

That mix helps explain Su’s wording: data center is not just a promising business for AMD; it has become the company’s largest revenue segment and a major source of its growth. Her interview connected that focus to rising demand for computing capacity.

How to read the 50% and “more than double” forecasts
Su said data center revenue could grow 50% sequentially from Q3 to Q4. “Sequentially” means compared with the immediately preceding quarter. That is different from the reported 97% year-over-year increase in Q3, which compares Q3 with the same quarter a year earlier.

She also discussed a much larger opportunity in 2027. Reporting on her outlook said AMD’s Data Center AI business could grow significantly more than double. Separately, earnings coverage reported expectations for more than 80% growth in AMD’s overall revenue and for chips designed for data centers to account for about 80% of sales. Those are distinct projections, not a single promise that the whole data center business will grow by the same amount.

Meeting the targets depends in part on supply. Su discussed AMD’s ability to expand supply, and the company said it had worked across its supply chain to secure wafers, substrates, advanced packaging, memory and other components for higher growth. These are plans and forecasts, not results already delivered.

What the shift means for gaming and PC buyers
The concern among gamers is understandable. AMD reported $773 million in gaming revenue, down 40% year over year. Its combined Client and Gaming segment generated $3.7 billion, down 8%. But the same report showed Client revenue of $2.9 billion, up 7%, illustrating that AMD’s consumer-related businesses did not all move in the same direction.

PC demand is another pressure point. Su said higher memory and component costs were weighing on demand, and AMD’s planning assumption was for a double-digit decline in PC unit sales in 2027. A company can gain share or perform relatively well in a shrinking market without growing its own revenue; Morningstar’s analysis, for example, noted both AMD’s relatively lower PC exposure and its expectation of a difficult market.

So “data center first” does indicate a change in AMD’s center of gravity. But the available evidence supports a shift in business emphasis—not a conclusion that Radeon, Ryzen or other consumer products are being discontinued. The phrase alone also cannot tell us how AMD will allocate resources among product teams over time.

The investor question behind the phrase
The growth targets are ambitious, and they depend on demand continuing and AMD being able to supply customers. Su has pushed back on market skepticism about the durability of AI demand, describing the market as sometimes short-sighted.

AMD’s roughly $17 billion Q4 company-wide revenue forecast was above Intel’s $15 billion–$16 billion forecast, according to coverage at the time. That made a quarterly sales crossover possible, not achieved; the comparison is about total company revenue, not leadership in every chip market.

The clearest takeaway is that AMD is increasingly organized around data center growth, while its consumer businesses face uneven results and a challenging PC outlook. “Data center first” describes that priority. It does not, on its own, settle what AMD will invest in next—or what its future product mix will look like.
