A Polish repair technician’s teardown of a Marvel’s Wolverine Limited Edition PS5 Slim revealed an EDM-051 motherboard and several internal changes, including a redesigned liquid-metal barrier, a different heatsink and a more accessible CMOS battery. The teardown documents hardware differences—not proof that the revision runs cooler or lasts longer.

What changed inside the EDM-051 PS5 Slim?
A redesigned liquid-metal barrier and heatsink
The console still uses liquid metal as the thermal interface between its processor and heatsink, but the surrounding barrier has been revised. Reports describing the teardown say the new arrangement exposes less of the liquid metal and resembles the approach used in the PS5 Pro. The heatsink’s construction or materials also differ from earlier Slim revisions.

Those details suggest a changed cooling design, but they do not establish its real-world performance. The teardown does not provide comparative temperature testing, so it cannot show whether the EDM-051 runs cooler under load. Nor does the visible redesign alone establish improved long-term reliability.
A more accessible CR2032 battery
The CR2032 CMOS battery is positioned so it can be reached and replaced more easily than in earlier Slim layouts, according to the teardown reports. That is a practical serviceability change: the battery no longer appears to require the same level of disassembly to access.

A revised HDMI retimer and board layout
The motherboard’s components have been rearranged, and the internal layout is described as simpler. The technician also reported a newer HDMI retimer implementation that may be lower-cost and more optimized. The retimer is involved in maintaining a stable video signal, but the reports do not independently establish the component’s actual cost or quantify any savings.

What the teardown does not confirm
The finding comes from one console in a limited-edition bundle. That is not enough to determine which other PS5 Slim units contain the EDM-051 board, or whether the revision is present across retail stock.

Reports also say the manual included with the console had not been updated to describe these internal changes. Sony had not publicly explained or confirmed the revision in the coverage cited here.

For now, EDM-051 is best understood as a documented hardware revision with observable changes to cooling, component layout and battery access. Whether those changes improve temperatures, reliability or repair outcomes remains unverified.
