Google Removes the Switch Back to Assistant as Gemini Takes Over Android

Google has removed the “Switch to Google Assistant” option from Gemini’s account menu for some Android users. Once the migration reaches a device, Gemini becomes its assistant experience, and users can no longer switch back to Google Assistant on that device. Reports observed the missing option in Google app 17.60 stable and 17.62 beta; they do not establish that the change began specifically in version 17.62.9. 113

What changed in Gemini

Previously, users could choose Google Assistant instead of Gemini from a setting in Gemini’s account menu. That switch-back option has disappeared in reports of the rollout. This is a change to which Google assistant users can select—not evidence that every voice-assistant shortcut has been removed. On devices where the migration has taken effect, Gemini is the Android voice-assistant experience. 12

The distinction matters: the reports identify the missing switching control, while Google’s transition notice describes Assistant access being removed from mobile devices. The change is therefore more than a relocated menu item once it reaches a device: there is no longer a Google Assistant option to restore there. 110

Which devices are affected?

Google’s notice says users will no longer be able to use or switch back to Assistant on their phone, tablet, or paired devices after access is removed. Reports name Wear OS watches and compatible headphones among the paired devices; they also include Android Auto in the mobile transition. 1710

The rollout is not described as an instant change for every user. Google said the removal could take a few weeks to reach everyone, so the option may disappear at different times on different devices. 610

What the version reports do—and don’t—show

Reports of the vanished setting point to Google app 17.60 stable and 17.62 beta. Another report specifically notes the option missing on devices running the latest beta, identified as version 17.62. Those details support the broader observation that the switch-back control is disappearing; they do not verify a specific starting point of 17.62.9. 113

Google Assistant’s mobile deprecation timeline

Google announced in March 2025 that it planned to move mobile users from Assistant to Gemini, with the classic Assistant becoming unavailable on most mobile devices later that year. 27 The company subsequently extended the transition into 2026. 28

In August 2026, Google announced the final mobile phase. Its support notice says it would begin removing Assistant access on September 3; contemporaneous reporting generally gives September 4. What about Google Nest and Home devices?

The mobile change should not be treated as proof that Assistant has been removed from every Google Home or Nest speaker and smart display. A September 2026 report said the mobile transition had not yet changed Assistant on those standalone speakers and displays. 1

Google’s home-device transition is separate from the Android mobile rollout, and the available reporting does not provide a reliable, current model-by-model list of which Nest and Home devices still use Assistant. The safest conclusion is limited: the mobile switch-back change does not establish the status of every home device. 123
