Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2: Everything You Need to Know About the August 4 Launch

The Free Trial: What You Get and What You Cannot Do

The free trial on Switch 2 is identical to the trial on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. It includes hundreds of hours of content with no time limit: the base game A Realm Reborn and three full expansions — Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers — letting you level every job to 80 .

However, the trial has the standard social restrictions. You cannot:

• Use the market board to buy or sell items
• Trade with other players
• Send /tells (whispers) or use shout/yell chat channels
• Form or join a Free Company (guild)
• Use the Party Finder to form groups
• Hold more than 300,000 gil

The trial is designed to let you experience the entire main story through Shadowbringers without paying a cent, but these limitations prevent free players from dominating the in-game economy or fully engaging with endgame social systems.

Subscription: The Big Catch (and the 50% Discount)

Here is the most important fine print. The Switch 2 version requires a separate Final Fantasy XIV subscription — you cannot share the one you already pay for on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox . On other platforms, one subscription covers all (PC, PS, Xbox, Mac). On Switch 2, that model breaks.

Square Enix producer Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) stated that this decision came “after discussions with Nintendo” .

Two concessions soften the blow:

1. No Nintendo Switch Online required. You do not need a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership to play FFXIV on Switch 2 .
2. 50% discount for existing subscribers. If you are an active subscriber on any other platform, you can get the Switch 2 subscription at half price — roughly $7.49–$7.50 per month, depending on your existing subscription tier .

The one-month free test period

To ensure server stability, Square Enix is waiving subscription fees for approximately one month after launch (through early September) . During this window, you can play on Switch 2 without paying the separate subscription fee. After that, the 30-day free play period included with your edition purchase begins, and then regular billing starts .

The bottom line on cost: If you already subscribe on PC (roughly $15/month) and want to add Switch 2 access, you will pay both subscriptions: $15 (PC) + $7.50 (Switch 2 discounted) = approximately $22.48 per month .

Storage, Currency, and Purchases

117 GB download

The Switch 2 version requires 117 GB of free storage space . Given that the base Switch 2 model has 256 GB, this is a substantial chunk. An external microSD Express card or internal storage management is advisable if you play other games.

FFXIV Coins: a new virtual currency

On Switch 2, all in-game purchases — including DLC, optional items, retainers, and other services — must be bought using FFXIV Coins, a virtual currency purchased through the Nintendo eShop. Standard credit-card payments via the Mog Station are not available on this platform .

Known Launch Bug: Prolonged Loading Screens

Square Enix has acknowledged a notable bug specific to the Switch 2 version. When entering instanced duties (dungeons, trials, raids), the screen may stay black for longer than usual after fading to black .

The company's investigation (published via the Lodestone on August 4) confirmed that the delay is caused by loading data when many characters are present in the area. The transition is particularly slow when:

• The screen fades to black during duty entry
• The screen fades in after completing an instanced duty

Status: Square Enix has identified the cause and states a fix is being prepared for testing . A patch is expected soon.

Other minor issues reported at launch include touch screen functionality problems (e.g., the Air Force One minigame at the Gold Saucer firing shots from the wrong position) and a soft keyboard conflict with the Home menu .

Performance: 30 FPS Target

During an interview at FanFest, Yoshi-P acknowledged that the Switch 2 port has some framerate limitations but confirmed that the team is “able to reach 30 frames per second in a stable state” and that, considering duty content, “performance is something that you don’t have to be concerned about” .

What Comes Next: Evercold Expansion (January 2027)

The next major expansion, Evercold, was officially revealed during a July 2026 event . It is slated for a January 2027 launch and will introduce:

• A new tank job (name not yet revealed)
• New zones and story content
• Continuation of the main scenario questline

Pre-orders on Switch 2 are not yet open but are expected closer to the release window .
