New Features: Built-in Screen and Dual Scroll Wheels

The most striking new addition is a small screen mounted between the triggers on the top edge of the controller . Its exact function hasn't been confirmed, but it's believed to handle device pairing, profile switching, or settings adjustments — possibly displaying a pairing interface that lets users switch between a local console connection and Xbox Cloud Gaming servers . This was the first time a screen appeared in any Elite 3 leak .

Two mouse-style scroll wheels are located on the bottom edge of the controller, beneath the D-pad and right stick . First spotted in the May 2026 Anatel regulatory leak, these wheels likely serve as additional customizable inputs — perhaps for volume control or game/chat audio mixing, similar to the wheels on Corsair's Scuf Valor Pro .

Other hardware changes visible in the leaked photos include:

• Oversized face buttons
• Flatter, more recessed face buttons
• Back paddles for additional input mapping
• A two-stage trigger lock
• A dedicated Wi-Fi / cloud-gaming button
• A hot-swappable rechargeable battery (a departure from the sealed battery in the Elite Series 2)
• A profile button

Repairability: A Modular Design

One surprising detail from the leak is the controller's apparent repairability. The buyer's photos show the prototype opened up, revealing screws and modular internal components — including a removable battery . This represents a significant shift from the sealed, difficult-to-repair design of the Elite Series 2. While the prototype was non-functional, the modular construction suggests Microsoft may be prioritizing serviceability in its next premium controller .

History of the Leaks

This was the second major leak of the Elite Series 3. In May 2026, images and regulatory filings from Brazil's telecommunications regulator (Anatel) first revealed the overall design, including the scroll wheels, the cloud-gaming button, and the hot-swappable battery . The August 2026 leak confirmed all those details and added the previously unknown built-in screen . Together, the two sets of images paint a consistent picture of an ambitious hardware refresh.

Expected Launch Timing

Microsoft has not officially announced or confirmed the Elite Series 3. Industry speculation, fueled by the appearance of what appears to be a functional prototype in the wild and the Anatel regulatory filing, points to a release window of late 2026 . No specific date or price has been confirmed.
