The expanded campaign length—over 14 hours—is packed with not just more cinematic moments but also the highest number of collectibles the series has ever seen, including the classic COG Tags . This extended playtime is structured around the new Bravo Squad, a four-person unit that players will experience the entire story with.
For the first time in the series, four distinct characters are playable from the very beginning in online co-op . The squad is led by younger, grieving versions of franchise icons Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, still voiced by John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro
. They are joined by two brand-new characters created specifically for this prequel:
The entire campaign is fully playable either solo or in co-op. The game supports four-player online co-op, and, crucially for longtime fans, local two-player split-screen has been confirmed for consoles .
By moving to Unreal Engine 5 and starting with completely fresh assets, the team had the freedom to modernize Gears’ iconic cover-based combat while retaining its signature weighty feel . The most immediately noticeable changes come from the radically expanded movement system.
For the first time, players can now use a brand-new sliding mechanic that lets them slip under obstacles, slide into cover, and even execute a weapon-slide to seamlessly grab ammo or weapons from the ground . This is paired with a dedicated jump and vaulting system. Unlike any previous Gears game, E-Day is built with significant verticality, allowing players to climb into buildings, leap across vehicles, and attack enemies from elevated positions
. These new options are designed to add tactical depth to combat puzzles without sacrificing the series’ core feel
.
Alongside the new movement comes an expanded arsenal. Two new weapons were prominently showcased during the reveal: the Gut Puncher, a grenade launcher that fires armor-piercing explosive rounds, and the Incinerator, a new type of shotgun .
The new engine and prequel setting also gave The Coalition the perfect opportunity to deliver a story fans have waited years to see: the origin of the Lancer’s chainsaw bayonet. In the initial Emergence Day chaos, Marcus wields a standard Mark 1 Lancer with a traditional, detachable bayonet—there is no chainsaw attachment yet . The chainsaw bayonet won’t appear until later in the story, and its invention is directly tied to the return of Tai Kaliso, a character from Gears of War 2. According to the developers, a desperate combat maneuver by Kaliso during the Locust attack provides the catalyst for the iconic weapon’s creation
.
Multiplayer remains a staple, and Gears of War: E-Day features two main modes alongside the campaign co-op:
The game is also confirmed to launch with a seasonal live-service roadmap, offering earnable content such as cosmetics and unlocks across post-launch seasons.
Players won’t have to wait until the full launch to experience the new mechanics. An open beta for Gears of War: E-Day has been confirmed for August 2026:
The full game will launch on October 6, 2026. A Collector’s Edition is available, granting players early access to the full game starting on October 1 . The title will be available on Xbox Series X|S and PC (via Steam and the Xbox app), and will launch day one on Game Pass Ultimate with Xbox Play Anywhere support
.
